my âbootsâ amv is popping off again, and when it does there are always understandable comments about how theyâd use this as a trailer to convince friends to watch, but thereâs too many spoilers. but i like to think theyâre so out of context that theyâd still be an intense and satisfying experience to watch in the show properly? like, we know what those major moments mean in context, but a newbie wouldnât? the amv is just a collection of similar looking white men in peril, yâknow?
highly recommend finding a friend and you both getting into quoting the last known words of people who vanished mysteriously

Hello! Sorry in advance for rambling and I think I remember you mentioning that you donât listen to the Dave K. playlists, but the Hickey one came out today and on the first playlist of two, I saw that one of the songs was Donald Crowhurst by Third eye foundation. I donât know anything about the band, but I remembered an ask I sent probably months ago regarding the person Donald Crowhurst and how he compares with the characters in The Terror, as you mentioned, like Sir Franklin and Doctor Stanley. I just had this thought that Hickey is a perfect comparison with Crowhurst as well. I donât know what Iâm connecting, but the idea of Crowhurst, a man with very little sailing experience taking it upon himself enter a race to sail around the world. The idea that he had to deceive others regarding his progress because he had so much to lose if he failed. All of this eventually culminating in him gradually losing his sanity with Crowhurst having delusions regarding gods and his place in the universe. Thereâs a lot more to his story, but I also remembered that scene in the last episode where Hickey says something like, âI canât go backâ and how he can only move forward. We donât know what heâs running from back in England, but the actions he took in order to run away from everything back home does show some level of desperation. I donât know, just seeing Donald Crowhurst attached to Hickey just hit me like a lightning bolt.

In all seriousness, I think you ought to have more confidence in your 'ramblings', my friend, because you've absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one. I'm in awe, honestly, and have very little of coherence to add!
Looking back at your original ask (which, funnily enough, came a year ago almost to the day) I do still think certain aspects of Crowhurst's story mirror well those of Franklin and Stanley. But Hickey's fate parallels Crowhurst's so closely and in so many ways that I can't believe I didn't fully appreciate it before now. It's hit me like a lightning bolt too!
Personally, I've long been obsessed with the reading of that line you've mentioned - "I-I I can't go back." and the backstory it speaks to.
Although his confidence seems to waver for a moment, Hickey remains resolute in only going forward and to me that begs the slightly terrifying question - "How fucking bad would your fate back in England be if facing down a charging Tuunbaq is honestly still, even now, the preferable option for you?!"
