Until death, all defeat is psychological.
I LOVE imagining Kaz, Dirtyhands, Bastard of the Barrel who laid in a pile of corpses including his own brothers and had to swim back to the shore and now canβt touch people without having a panic attack or fainting.
And Nina, the Corpsewitch. Who can control dead bodies.
Isnβt it so fun to imagine Kaz just terrified of her. I mean she can literally make his biggest nightmare come to life and he knows it.
Which also emphasizes his trust in her, because he knows she would never do that and therefore isnβt scared of her, but I would love to see him witness some of her necromancy and start freaking out because what do you mean the corpses that he had to lay in a pile of are now moving and grabbing people and killing people? What do you mean he can see their skin falling off as they walk closer? Something Iβve been thinking about
A troupe that pains me is character that wants nothing more than a soft domestic life with their partner dying right before the epilogue
my mom just came to me and ranted about how everyone is making this facebook status that says, βraising teenagers is like nailing jello to a treeβ. she was so baffled by this because she said, βyou were pretty easy to raise as teenagers. all you did was sleep and eat.βΒ
so to prove some point sheβs going to nail a small cup of jello to a tree.Β
sheβs so pleased with her self
incredible
parents are weirdΒ
yeah but this is about as accurate as it gets.
you say βnail jello to a treeβ and most people think jello all by itself.
but if you put any actual thought into what youβre doing and then give it just a little support
well gosh. look what happens.
please tell your mom good job.
also love how the original metaphor of βnailing jello to a treeβ is about trying to force your bizarre and arbitrary will on something that is categorically disinclined to do such a thing, for no conceivable reason.

I see a lot of people online saying that Orpheus (Hadestown specifically) looks back because he loves Eurydice so much, that there isn't a world in which he doesn't look back, because the kind of man who wouldn't look back is not the kind of man who would go after her in the first place, etc. It's inevitable because of the strength of his love. But I don't see that as being the whole picture. Textually, it is explicitly his doubt in himself, and in the narrative of his life, that makes him look back: "Doubt Comes In", and he wonders, who is he that Hades would let him win? Who is he that Eurydice would follow him through the dark? Orpheus used to have a very simple, naive view of the world and his place in it. He was single-minded. At the beginning he tells Eurydice he's the man who is going to marry her because...well, that's how the story should go, and he is a poet first and foremost. Then, when he meets Hades, he is confronted by what Eurydice did and what the world is really like. He is shattered by the realisation that Eurydice wasn't just a simple, "pure" victim, but that she signed her life away. He is beaten down and loses faith, he goes into "Is this how it is?" after he's literally already done the impossible by reaching Hadestown on foot. He should have proven his abilities to himself by this point, but things aren't going the way they are supposed to and he doesn't know who he is anymore. He isn't just a boy in love with a girl who sings a song to bring back spring: he's a boy who didn't look back when he should have the first time when she called his name; she's a girl who chose her immediate needs over his grand ideals. His faith in a world where they make it back together is broken. He looks back because he doesn't trust himself or the narrative that he's found himself in. It's even more heartbreaking to me, because the Orpheus he was at the beginning of the musical might not have looked back, but that version of Orpheus doesn't make it out of the Underworld.
And to top it all off, the version of Eurydice from the beginning of the musical, before love softened her hard edges and made her trust him, probably wouldn't have followed Orpheus out of Hadestown. Eurydice really does trust him to get her out, because she's looking for the Orpheus she used to know and she's seen the power of his song and worldview.
Am I rambling into the void or does this make sense to anyone else?
I am a really really big fan of this whole filming and putting pro-shots of musicals in theater
rereading the most intimate romance story of all time (six of crows) so every little line that slipped away from my memory over the last year twists the knife it left in my side a little harder. oh ragtag group of teenage criminals, you are young and you are yearning. we should all aspire to feel as alive and in love as you.

i do think lobbying for data centres over climate goals should be considered a crime against humanity btw
every friend group has a corpse in it. if you think yours doesn't, YOU'RE the corpse.
Did I just employ the "Treat Them Like You are A Kindergarten Teacher Again" method with my insurance company today? I surely did. Did it work? Probably better than intended because I made an actual doctor feel contrite.
So, my insurance has been trying to not cover my SNRI because it is new on the market and no generic available yet, so pricey.
I apply for a refill and the request gets locked for review. Again. For the 3rd time.
This time I call and immediately ask to speak to the actual doctor making these clinical decisions. Very politely. Must be a slow day because they allow it.
ME: [Teacher voice] I'm calling in regards to the SNRI you have placed a lock on. Why was this decision made?
DOC: Well, there are dozens of other medications on the market in that tier, and far cheaper for you and [insurer]. We have sent a request to your doctor to consider alternatives.
ME: I am aware of that. So, can you do me a HUGE favor and look up my prescription history really quickly and tell me how many SSRIs and SNRIs were only filled once in 2022 for me, showing they were poorly tolerated?
DOC: It looks like eight.
ME: Great job! Now, can you please look at my genetic test for psychiatric drug tolerance and tell me how many medications are listed in the safe category?
DOC: Two.
ME: Awesome! Now, can you tell me what type that other drug is that I'm not taking?
DOC: Yeah, totally, it's an MAOI.
ME: That's correct, you're really knowledgeable! Should I be taking something as dangerous as an MAOI with my other medications, or even just in general?
DOC: It's contraindicated for sure.
ME: It is! So true! So, last question since you've been incredibly smart and helpful. Is it less expensive for [insurer] to pay out for the medication knowing they already get a huge manufacturer discount anyway, or is it more expensive for them to pay for me to need potentially long-term inpatient psychiatric care?
DOC: I'll clear the code, ma'am and flag it as medically necessary. I'm sorry about this.
ME: I appreciate you SO MUCH. You have a great day now.
