Metroid turns 40 today. 🎂 The first game in the series, Metroid, released on this day in 1986 on the Famicom.
The game introduced players to a nonlinear world built around backtracking and gated exploration, a structure so influential that an entire genre of games, Metroidvania, carries its name.
It was also one of the first games to have the protagonist be a female, which is kept a secret through the first game, only revealed at the end if the player does well enough on their playthrough.
