Qifrey: 

Now when Qifrey had been told that he would be receiving a new young witch into his atelier, he was a little surprised given how many apprentices he already had.

The newcomer was quiet, practically saying everything with their eyes. He soon learned why—they were mute, unable to speak. 

Fortunately, to cast spells, witches didn’t need to speak. Unfortunately for his new apprentice, the world of witches wasn’t too kind to any disability, which is why this apprentice’s old master gave them up, not wanting to deal with them. 

Qifrey thought that cruel, after all, it didn’t inhibit the child’s spell-casting whatsoever. Sure, they were quiet, but they were observant and picked up new magic very quickly.

He would have no issue with a mute apprentice. Would defend you from other judgy witches with his usual twisty language and backhanded insults. Think how he faced Easthies.

He would believe you very capable and would have nothing but the utmost faith in you.

He would encourage your love for magic and have such continuous faith in you. 

He would make an effort to understand your hand movements, a human outsider language often used by mute or hard of hearing outsiders to communicate. He would learn and respond to them as well as he could make them out.

Olruggio: 

Another new apprentice? Qifrey already has four, isn’t that enough for him?

Then he meets you, a young, mute witch. He doesn’t consider you to be anything special, but he knows how the witch world treats those it deems ‘damaged’ or ‘lesser’. 

He tracks your progress, after hearing you’d been let go from your last master because of insolence. But you weren’t insolent, you were observant and clever, picking up spells fast without complaint. You seemed to always need to prove yourself to others and Olruggio understood why.

You, under Qifrey, had completed the second test with a sense of ease that hadn’t apparently been seen in a long time. You were resourceful and strong-witted. 

He, in a sense, took you under his wing, in a metaphorical sense. Would leave new books at your desk that he thoughts would benefit you. He would stick up for you whenever he’d go out with the rest of the Atelier to Kahln, whenever other witches would whisper about the witch apprentice who would never speak.

Through his help, you would flourish. He would hang around the common area more with his numerous magical gadgets. You would point or gesture and he would nod and accept whatever suggestion you gestured. 

He wouldn’t tell you, but he would learn the outsider’s ’signing language’ so he could understand you and how you spoke, opposed to verbal communication. He would offhandedly make a comment and after you responded, he would reply with another remark, as if a normal and natural conversation, yet it meant so much to you. 

He wouldn’t mind your presence, since you were quiet, but expressive. He quite enjoyed teaching you, although you were Qifrey’s apprentice. He would grumble to himself about it, but he was fond of you and the other apprentices. He treated you gruffly, but with respect and kindness, and you admired him for it. 

“Why won’t it glow like the other prototypes” “…” “I see, yes that makes some sense I suppose.”

“Here…yes, it’s a book. It’s a spell book. Thought it be useful to you.”

Coco: 

Another new apprentice witch in the atelier? She was overjoyed! Another new witch! She couldn’t wait to befriend them!

Apparently they were mute, unspeaking. Coco didn’t mind that, but she remembered how Tartah had told her what witches think of disabled witches. She had heard, albeit eavesdropping with Tetia and Richeh about the new apprentice’s old master, who had scorned them. Coco felt that Master Qifrey’s atelier was sure to help this new apprentice, whether they were mute or not. 

Coco may not have been around magic for that long, but they saw how capable and powerful this new apprentice was, despite being mute. She felt that Tartah would find this new apprentice as encouraging, in a sense. It would encourage him to become an apprentice despite his silverwash, which is what Coco hoped for. She knew he was smart, but that he needed to know that he could do it, and this new apprentice could convince him that he was capable enough to do so. 

She would practice new spells with them in the common room, blabbering amazement about all things magical. You would listen and sign with your hands in between spells. 

Soon Coco and you would become well and could friends and Coco would learn of your ambition to create a spell that translated things someone signed into verbal magic, as if talking without actually having to say a word. She was amazed by the idea, positively impressed and raving about how she hoped you would be able to do it someday. 

Would be very encouraging. Nothing else to say besides that she’s not really the person to criticize about people practicing magic (the legal way) who can’t speak. 

“Wow! That’s an incredible idea!! I can’t wait to see how you do that!”

Agott:

Would be a little critical of a new apprentice entering the atelier. You are also a mute witch and she’s never met one before. But she supposed since magic is drawn and not spoken, then it doesn’t matter whether a witch can speak or not. 

She notices your ambition and drive, similar to her own. You work hard and learn very quickly. You’re clever and quick-witted. She appreciates that out of a fellow apprentice. She’d definitely be glad that someone else at that atelier has a similar drive to magic as her. 

While she spends most of her time in her room drawing spells, I don’t think she’d mind your company. You’re quiet and don’t really bother her, so out of everyone at the atelier, you’re the least bothersome. 

You would observe her and see how she does things magically, how she draws and what she draws. She would observe you. 

She would wonder why you came to the atelier so late since you were her age, grew up as a witch and had a higher skill level than most witches their age. She assumed you had just moved your training to a different master and that was that.

After eavesdropping about your old master, she was a little furious. You were a promising witch who worked hard, reminding her a little of herself. She cornered you one afternoon about it, telling you that she didn’t care what your old master thought and that you were capable and clever, and not to forget that as you became a good witch. 

I think you and her would get along.

She would allow you in her room since you two work well in silence together. She would bring up your meal so your two could work and eat. 

She would pick up on some of the hand signs you did to communicate—the basic, simple ones. 

“I see, rather, maybe if you changed this sign it would produce a longer strand of light to form letters” “That line?” “…” “It is rather long, you’re right. It would work smoother as a shorter-range spell.”

Tetia:

I fear she wouldn’t care. So long as you’re nice.

Another new apprentice thst Master Qifrey brought back. Tetia would be confused but accept it quickly. 

A mute apprentice would be a little surprising, but she would accept it quickly, doing most of the talking.

You would teach her what the hand sign for ‘thank you’ was and she would do it towards you while also saying “thank you!”

You worked hard and were kind. Tetia would likely wonder why Master Qifrey would take you on as an apprentice at your age and skill level.

When she overheard about your old master, it would likely make her a little sad. You were so lovely that there was no reason your old master should’ve been as cruel as he was to you. She swore that she would treat you with kindness and make sure the other apprentices and masters treated you that way as well. 

She would try to involve you in activities, saving you a seat at mealtimes and practicing new spells with you.

Sweetest ever, actually. She wouldn’t mind how quiet you were and would pick up on the little hand signs you did. She would even try to mimic them, or try to learn how to do them just to communicate with you in a way that wasn’t verbal. 

“Come! Come! I saved you a seat!!” “That’s a really cool spell!” 

Richeh:

Another new apprentice? There were already many of them at the atelier, yet, Master Qifrey brought a new apprentice. 

They were quiet and didn’t seem to speak much, or at all. Turns out, they were a mute witch. 

That didn’t bother Richeh. It didn’t matter if you were mute or not, you were an apprentice witch under Master Qifrey. 

She wasn’t incredibly bubbly and sparkly to you like Tetia was, not was she cold to you. She had a neutral opinion.

You didn’t make her do anything, merely give her things you think she’d enjoy or like. Spells that you had an idea that she’d enjoy would make their way onto her desk somehow. 

She also learned some of the gestures you did and took little note of them. She understood that way your way of communicating with the world, your own way. The way that allowed you to do things your own way while also doing magic and other things every day. 

While she wondered how some witch of your age and skill level had ended up at Qifrey’s atelier, she wasn’t one to judge. She had been the same, so she understood the concept of moving masters.

One day she overheard conversation between Master Qifrey and Master Olruggio about how your old master treated you and it made her very angry. She remembered how her old master had treated her, how he had belittled her. She knew her experience was bad, but realized that it was likely worse for you considering you didn’t have the ability to verbally fight back like she did. 

She didn’t pity you despite knowing. Instead, she indirectly helped you. She wasn’t as neutral to you. You were quiet and didn’t bother her or make her do things she didn’t want to do. In her mind, you both went through a similar thing with a bad master and understood each other’s experiences in a sense. 

She would remember to save you soup and bread and would pay the seat beside her lightly, a small gesture of kindness. 

Gifts you magic spell ribbons to put your hair up with. 

“Thank you for the books. . .” “That’s for you, for your hair, told hold it back.” 

Tartah:

You come into the shop one day with Master Qifrey and the other apprentices of his atelier. At first, Tartah shows no interest. But as soon as he learns of you, or rather, thr fact you don’t speak, he is baffled.

His silverwash gave him a perspective of the world that you seemed to shatter somehow. You were a mute witch. You couldn’t speak yet you were practically a magical prodigy. It was inspiring somehow. 

He talked to you more, asking questions, to which you wrote down answers. He tried as he could to learn the many hands signs or the signing language you used to communicate nonverbally. It was filling him with much more than just confidence, but hope as well. 

He learned of how you got to Master Qifrey’s atelier from Tetia, Coco, and Richeh, who let it slip that your last master was a cruel person who tormented you for not speaking and obeying his every command. 

Despite this, you seemed to flourish, becoming ever stronger. To Tartah, despite all that you went through and the trauma it caused you and you still excelled—it was inspiring. 

He makes you your own pen for drawing spells, telling you to use it well. He wants, one day, to be a strong and capable a witch as you. You were paving the way for witches like him. 

Meeting you would shift his worldview, definitely. Probably shift his future path too—(IYKYK) 

“Aye, it’s a pen, and it’s for you. Use it well.” “You can’t speak, aye don’t believe it, a mute witch. . .”

Easthies:

he would probably hate you or be neutral about you

Not too bothered by some mute witch who follows the rules. Far as he’s concerned, you’re being responsible and doing as you’re told.

He does keep an eye on you after he hears of your previous master though, just in case.
