UNSEEN GUARDIAN PROTOCOL
Alton waited until Trey had gone down to the waterfall before retrieving the satellite phone from his pack.
He moved beyond the campsite, checked that Trey was still occupied, and called Coach Stone.
Coach answered immediately.
“Report.”
Alton glanced back toward the water.
“We had an incident.”
“What kind of incident?”
“A bear came into camp.”
There was a pause.
“Was Trey injured?”
“Nothing serious. Couple of scratches.”
Another pause.
“What did he do?”
Alton looked at the mud where the struggle had taken place.
“He wrestled it.”
Coach’s voice became very still.
“He wrestled a bear.”
“He thought it was me in disguise.”
The silence that followed lasted several seconds.
Then Coach said, “Keep him at the campsite.”
“Coach—”
“Keep him there.”
The call ended.
Far from the waterfall, inside the Golden Army facility, Coach entered a restricted operations room and activated PDU-055.
The unit stood upright beneath the gold lights, wearing a seamless black-and-gold one-piece field uniform.
Coach delivered the directive without emotion.
MISSION: Proceed to Trey’s campsite. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Protect number 59. SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: Prevent further wildlife engagement. VISUAL CONTACT: Prohibited. TREY MUST NOT KNOW PDU-055 IS PRESENT.
PDU-055 responded immediately.
DIRECTIVE ACCEPTED. Trey WILL BE PROTECTED. PRESENCE WILL REMAIN UNDETECTED.
By late afternoon, Trey and Alton had settled beside the waterfall again.
Trey was explaining, for the third time, that he had nearly defeated the bear before Alton appeared.
“You didn’t see the start of it, bruv. I had the whole situation under control.”
Alton stirred the fire.
“You had mud in your mouth.”
“Tactical mud.”
Neither man noticed the dark figure watching from the ridge above them.
PDU-055 had reached the forest without using the marked trail. His uniform was covered by a matte field layer that broke up his outline among the trees. He moved slowly, placing each foot where the ground would make no sound.
Within minutes, he had mapped the campsite.
He identified the bear’s approach route, unstable rocks near the pool, a damaged tree above Trey’s tent, and an approaching storm system.
His internal report updated:
THREAT LEVEL: UNACCEPTABLE. ALTON PRESENT. PROTECTIVE CAPABILITY: INSUFFICIENT. PDU-055 ASSUMING CONTROL.
When Trey and Alton went swimming beneath the waterfall, 055 entered the campsite.
He relocated their food into a sealed container and suspended it high between two trees. He reinforced the tent lines, cleared loose stones from the path, and carved shallow drainage channels around the sleeping area.
He completed every task before Trey emerged from the water.
Trey stopped beside the tent.
“Did you move the food?”
Alton looked over.
“No.”
“Well, I didn’t.”
They both stared at the container hanging above them.
Alton already suspected the answer, but said nothing.
That evening, the bear returned.
It emerged through the trees beyond the firelight, drawn back by the smell of food.
Trey rose immediately.
“Look who’s back.”
Alton stood between Trey and the animal.
“You are not wrestling it again.”
“I’m not saying I’m going to.”
“You’re taking your jewelry off.”
“That proves nothing.”
Before the bear could move closer, a heavy branch crashed into the forest several hundred feet away. A second sound followed from the opposite direction.
The bear turned, hesitated, and moved away from the campsite.
Trey watched it disappear.
“See? Respect.”
From the darkness, PDU-055 lowered the device he had used to create the diversion.
WILDLIFE REDIRECTED. TREY ATTRIBUTES OUTCOME TO PERSONAL DOMINANCE. CORRECTION UNNECESSARY.
Later, rain swept through the forest.
Trey and Alton retreated beneath their shelter while water poured from the canopy. The drainage channels created by 055 carried the runoff safely around the tents.
During the night, the damaged tree above Trey’s sleeping area began to shift.
PDU-055 detected the movement before the trunk cracked.
He climbed the slope, secured a cable around the tree, and redirected its fall away from the campsite. The trunk struck the ground deep in the forest, waking Trey.
He sat up sharply.
“What was that?”
“Tree falling,” Alton said.
Trey listened.
For an instant, he saw the outline of a man standing beyond the rain—broad shoulders, perfectly still posture, gold reflecting faintly through the leaves.
He stepped outside.
The figure was gone.
“Someone’s here.”
Alton joined him at the entrance.
“Who would be out here?”
Trey scanned the forest.
“Dunno.”
Hidden above them, PDU-055 remained motionless.
POTENTIAL DETECTION EVENT. TREY SUSPICIOUS. WITHDRAWAL DISTANCE INCREASED.
The following morning, Trey discovered the fallen tree lying safely away from the tent. Their firewood was dry beneath a newly constructed cover. Fresh bear tracks stopped well outside the campsite, as though something had prevented the animal from approaching.
Trey looked at Alton.
“You’ve been doing all this while I’m asleep, haven’t you?”
Alton poured the coffee.
“Definitely.”
“You’re lying.”
“Definitely.”
Trey narrowed his eyes but accepted the cup.
High above the waterfall, PDU-055 watched until Trey began eating breakfast.
Then the unit transmitted a secure update to Coach Stone.
UNIT 059 SAFE. BEAR THREAT CONTAINED. CAMP PERIMETER SECURED. PRESENCE NOT CONFIRMED BY TREY. MISSION CONTINUES UNTIL EXTRACTION.
Coach read the report and replied with a single instruction:
DO NOT LET HIM WRESTLE ANYTHING ELSE.
PDU-055 processed the directive.
ACCEPTED. ALL AVAILABLE FORCE AUTHORIZED.
