Birthday Plans
Molly was walking down Diagon Alley carrying Bill on her right hip and carrying her shopping tote on the left side. She was picking up supplies today for the small birthday party Arthur and her were throwing for Billās first birthday.Ā
She couldnāt believe that Bill was turning one year old. The last year seemed to fly by in a flash. As much as she enjoyed watching little Bill wobble around the house and starting to talk, she missed the time when Bill was still a little baby that wanted to cuddle all the time. They stopped in to a little cornerĀ grocery store so Molly could get the ingredients to make a cake and the fixings for a big dinner.Ā
āOh Billy. Would you rather blue icing or red? OH! How about we do red and gold!ā Mollyās eyes lite up at the thought of a Gryffindor themed party.

Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus...
Molly let the fake smile fall from her face and let a small real one spread on to her face. She would never had written to Narcissaās mother. Who knows what Durella would do to the 16 year old if Molly reached out.Ā
āI hope to see an owl from you if you get word of Uncle Ignatius. It would be veryĀ āfamilyā of you.ā Molly looked around to make sure no one was looking or paying attention to them, before pulling a box with a ribbon wrapped around it out of her bag.
āI used to make and sneaked this for you and Andromeda at events our familiesā would attend. I donāt know if you still like them or if they are below your standards now, but I thought you might like some.ā Molly whispered this to Narcissa as she passed off the box of home made cauldron cakes.Ā
Narcissa held the small box in her hands, confused at the gesture of good will. She knew Molly had wanted the updates, she herself could not obtain. but why the sentiments of past? The threats of her mother had certainly done the trick for the sixth year. Ā
āFamily or notā¦why would you do this for me? Whatās the catch?ā she asked curiously.
Molly looked at the blonde for a long while. Only 16 and soĀ suspicious and paranoid. This is what families like the Blacks did to their children. They raise their kids with fear and as the kids grew up the fear turned to hatred either for their family or more likely the things their family hated like Muggles and muggle borns. Molly wondered where Narcissa would fall in to it all as an adult.
āLook I was baking them for Arthur and made to many. When the Head Master invited me to come to the school I remembered that you used to like them so I packed them up so if I saw you I could give them to you. If that isnāt not a good enough reason for you, then take them as a form of payment for any information you get onĀ Uncle Ignatius.ā
Molly looked around to make sure once again no one was watching them, before leaning in and whispering.
āTides are turning Cissa. People are taking sides. Who knows how long until our families are completely pulled apart and separated. I rather spend the little bit of time we do have being civil with each other.ā Ā
Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus...
āOh donāt worry Dear, I am here on invite from the Head Master, I unfortunately over heard in your loud squawking, that sweet UncleĀ Ignatius is ill. I am concerned for his health as is but adding Dragon Pox to it all, itāsĀ just dreadful. Do you have any word on how he is doingā¦ā Molly paused. She knew Narcissa wasnāt going to be forthcoming with information if not provoked.
āOr I could just owl your mother and ask her myself. Iām sure she would love to hear about this encounter.ā Molly felt bad about black mailing her distant cousin for information but Uncle Ignatius was very close to Mollyās heart and she really didnāt have another way to get information after being as good as black listed from that side of the family.Ā
Narcissa, sucked in a gulp of air, holding back a string of insults. The talk of her mother, had made her uneasy and she knew home life would be harsher than usual as word of Siriusās sorting had spread. Now, would not be the time to be caught arguing with a blood traitor in front of a crowd.Ā
āand here I thought money insults were beneath you, Molly. Itās great to see the hovel, you now call home hasnāt caused you to lose the family charm. The last news I heard was of Ignatius was his diagnosis, perhaps Iāll hear more when I get a letter from homeā¦or perhaps not. It really is a shame, that I donāt have answers for you at this exact moment. Now, if youāll excuse me, itās been a pleasure but Iām actually a student here.āĀ

Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus...
Molly walked up the pathway from Hogsmeade, eyes roaming over the landscape. So familiar, reminding her of all the times she spent on the grounds of Hogwarts with Arthur and their friends. Her eyes fell on a large willow tree that was moving in a unnatural way, slamming itās limbs up and then crashing them down hard to the ground below it. That tree wasnāt there the last time she had visited the school. She would have surly noticed THAT. making a mental note to ask about it later she reached the front of the school and looked up at the castle with the same awe she had 11 years ago the first time she saw it in all itās glory. Taking a big breath she smiled and spun on the spot.
It was so good to be back.
Molly pushed open the doors to the Entrance Hall and was thrown in to the busyness that was the first day of term at Hogwarts.Ā
Minerva spotted the vibrant red hair of her ex-student and smiled widely. She remembered her running around with Arthur like it was yesterday, the pair were very much in love when they had left school. She had been looking forward to catching up with her and, as luck would have it, she had a few hours free to enjoy a cup of tea with her.
Minerva hurried down the steps to greet Molly, dodging the students running around in first day of school giddiness. She narrowly avoided stepping on a toad and slipped to the door.
āMolly dear, itās wonderful to see you again. Letās head to my office for a pot of tea and a biscuit, and you can tell me all about your wee bairn.ā
Mollyās face broke out in large grin. Professor McGonagall was her favorite Professor in school. The professor had turned in to Mollyās mentor as she got older.Ā
Molly flung her arms open and wrapped them around her ex-Professor in a big hug. Molly wasnāt sure how McGonagall would take the hug but as the war went on Molly realized how impotent showing the people in your life just how much they mean to you.Ā
āOh Professor! I have missed you and the school! Everything is the same...well other than that bully of a new tree you have out there. How are the first years? and all the Gryfindores?!ā Molly rambled on and on, but realized there wasnāt an end in sight for her gushing so she simply ended with a soft āI would love some tea Professor. Thank you.ā
Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus...
Molly looked over at a blond girl that was yelling very loudly at another student. She saw that it was the youngest Black sister that was making all the racket. Molly walked up quietly behind Narcissa and waited for her to be done talking. She was a bit worried by the news that her uncle Ignatius was sick but she would get down to that business in a minute.
āItās funny how you all think Iām the family embarrassment when here you are yelling and carrying on in the middle of the Entrance Hall like a troll. Whatever would sweetĀ Druella think if she saw you being so emotional in public like this?ā Molly wasnāt normally one forĀ jeering remarks but after spending 5 years in Hogwarts with Narcissaās older sister Bellatrix and a couple of years with the better manner but still quick tonguedĀ Andromeda, Molly had a short temper when it came to the Black sisters.Ā
Upon hearing her mothers name, Narcissa instantly froze. Years of harsh insults and debutant training came rushing back to the forefront of her mind. She knew exactly the type of reaction her mother would have to such an outburst and it wasnāt pretty. Smoothing out her skirt and plastering on a false smile, Narcissa spun around to face the antagonizing voice.
ā..ahh Molly. What an absolute pleasure it is to see you out of the slums for once. Iāll be sure to mention a hello to mother, for you in my next letter home. Iām sure sheād love to hear about this encounter. Now,is there a reason someone of your age is so interested in a 6th years conversation or can I be on my way?ā
Molly smiled down at the youngest black girl. āLovely to see you as well Cissa. No new school robes this year? Iām surprised you are wearing robes that are soooo last year.ā As much as Narcissa grated on her nerve and even though she deserved to be put in her place, Molly could see the fear that the Black family put in to her, and that was something Molly could understand. There was a reason Molly and Arthur eloped in secret. Ā Even though Molly married quote unquoteĀ āPureā not just the extended family but also Mollyās immediate familyĀ wasnāt very please about the fact that Arthur and Molly were very Pro Muggle and liked to blame this on Arthurās influence.Ā
It was dangerous business being Ā part of the Sacred Twenty-EightĀ and even scarier business if you were caught doing something less then flattering by an older member of the āFamilyā.Ā
āOh donāt worry Dear, I am here on invite from the Head Master, I unfortunately over heard in your loud squawking, that sweet UncleĀ Ignatius is ill. Molly pushed open the doors to the Entrance Hall and was thrown in to the busyness that was the first day of term at Hogwarts.Ā
Hearing the creaking sound of the castle doors opening, Narcissaās attention was immediately drawn away from her blonde companion towards the incoming figure. Her eyes zeroed in on a frumpy redheaded woman in farm style clothing. Upon further inspection she realized it was the Prewett girl. She remembered Molly from conversations, her parents and family friends often had at societal functions. A majority of whichā¦were not filled with pleasantries. Molly was a very distant relative through marriage and not a welcome one at that.
Annoyed at the fact, that another appalling family member seemed to be in her presence, Narcissa tried her best to ignore the overly cheerful woman.
She could not believe how terrible this week was shaping out to be. SiriusĀ embarrassedĀ her beyond belief last night and she couldnāt stand for this woman toĀ dare try now. Narcissa opened her mouth to tell the blonde she was leaving but before she could respond another sixth year strode up and tried to question Narcissa about a howler that had come in for Sirius earlier that morning.
He was the fifth student today, who had come to ask what Narcissa knew and she was already sick of it. She refused to talk to anyone about Sirius, in fact she would discuss literally any member of her family but him.
āif youāre so worried about my family line, why not ask about my poor, dear cousin-law Ignatius whoās suffering from dragon pox? Surely that newsĀ must satisfy your prying nature?ā Ā

Sirius started as the woman spun him around into a hug. He had a brief glimpse of her kind face before he was enveloped into the first motherly hug heād had⦠well, since his Governess left him, really. His mother was never one for hugs. She thought them undignified. The woman pulling him into her arms was his cousin Molly Prewett. Well, he supposed it was Molly Weasley now. His mother and father hated Molly. They said she married a blood traitor. He still saw her and Mr. Weasley at social events sometimes, but his parents had disapproved of him talking to them. Ā
He closed his eyes at the relatively unfamiliar affection. At her comforting words, Sirius felt a few tears leak out and attempted to hide them where his face was pressed into her robes. He didnāt know what to say to that. Because she was right, of course. He wasnātĀ fine.
Molly smiled down at the boy and and pulled some chocolate truffles out of her bag and handed him some.Ā āHere have some of these. i made them this morning.ā She took one herself and bit in to it.Ā āThink of it as a congratulation for being sorted in to Gryffiondore!āĀ
She bumped her hip against his and finished off her chocolate.Ā āSo tell me have you found the Kitchens yet?ā
Sirius gave Molly a watery smile and took the truffles with a quiet āthank you.ā He ate one and oh MerlinĀ it was delicious.Ā āYou made these?ā his voice was muffled around the chocolate. She made them?Ā Siriusā mother never made anything. She always said cooking was for elves. For a moment Sirius was jealous of Mollyās son. He would have loved to have had a mother like her. Siriusā heart was warmed when she congratulated him on being sorted into Gryffindor. Molly was, in almost every way, his motherās complete opposite.Ā
Sirius, now smiling a little more genuinely, repliedĀ āThe kitchens? No, I havenāt! Do youĀ know where they are?ā
āYou like them? They are a new recipe. Iāll send some more with an owl when I get home. I make way to much for Arthur and I to eat. If you donāt mind Iāll send you extra treats and you can share with your friends...ā Molly trailed off. She was so delighted to see her little cousin that she hadnāt got to talk to in a long time, but forgot that his parents probably wouldnāt be to happy to hear that their son was reaseving care-packages from the family blood traitor. The image of a red facedĀ Walburga flashed across Mollyās mind and she wanted to laugh. As much as she would love to make her stuck up family member boil over she didnāt want to make any extra trouble for Sirius.Ā āMaybe it can be our own family secret. Your mother might disprove of my influence and of supplying you with sweets.ā Molly rolled her eyes and laughed.Ā
āYou havenāt found the kitchen yet?!? I canāt believe it. All Gryffindores most know where the kitchen is so that you can nick some snacks to fuel all that bravery in your bones! I can only tell you were it is if you solemnly swear to tell all your friends as well.ā Molly loved the idea of telling a bunch of first years where the kitchens were and thinking about how mad Gideon and Fabian would be when they go down there for food and finding it packed with first years. She was sure she will be getting an owl about this latter.

Sirius ran. He ran and he ran until he found himself near the Black Lake. Out of breath, and blinking sweat or tears,Ā he wasnāt sure which out of his eyes, he leaned heavily against the large beech tree near the shore. His mind still rang with his motherās words.Ā
He was only there for seconds before he heard a kind voice from behind him. He stiffened. He didnāt want anyone to see him so upset. Without turning he answered. āUm⦠yeah.ā His voice shook.Ā āYeah. āM fine.ā He closed his eyes, ashamed of the tears of humiliation, fear and hurt still streaking down his face.Ā
Molly watched the distraught boy lie about beingĀ āfineā. BeingĀ āfineā was something she had heard many family members say and even said herself when she thought her emotions were making her weak. She was at a loss at what she could do to help the young Black. She didnāt want to make things worse, and she knew that she was the last person any Black family member wanted to see but she couldnāt stop thinking about what she would hope someone would do for Bill if he was in the same spot. It didnāt even take five seconds before she took the last steps over to the boy and turned him around and pulled him in to a bone crushing motherly hug. She rubbed soothing circles on his back .Ā
āIāll let you in on a secret. Whenever I say iāmĀ āfineā, I never really am.ā

As Molly was looking around the Entrance Hall she was almost knocked over by a familiarĀ black haired blur running out the doors. After getting her footing, she walk back outside and looked around for the retreating student.Ā
She spotted him heading to the Great Lake and approached him at a swift pace. As she got closer she recognized him to be Orion Blackās oldest son Sirius. She had been to many family and social events with him from the time he was born. Both Molly andĀ Andromeda spent most of those events watching and playing with the younger kids.

The First Howler || 2 September 1971
Sirius sat at the Gryffindor table surrounded by his new friends. He felt much better than he did the night before. James, Remus and Marlene seemed to have had that effect on him. He smiled and talked and ate his first delicious Hogwarts Breakfast in peace.Ā
Midway through the meal, the Owl Post arrived. Dozens of owls descended upon the students delivering packages from home, letters, newspapers, andā¦
And for himā¦
A Howler.
Siriusā stomach sank. A Howler on the first day? He was too shocked to move, and his shock lost him the precious time he would have needed to make it out of the great hall before the Howler exploded open and his motherās shrill, cruel voice boomed:
āSirius Orion Black how DARE you. You have brought shame upon The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black. A Gryffindor for a son. You disgust me. You disgust and dishonour the entire family with your deviant behaviour. We have written to the Headmaster about having you moved. This will not stand. We will handle this matter further when you arrive home for Christmas. You will regret this.ā
Sirius sat stiffly, his ears ringing with her words and from the volume of her shouts.Ā
āā¦Having you movedā¦ā But he didnāt want to be moved. Sirius didnāt chooseĀ to be in Gryffindor, but even if he could have⦠he liked being in the same house as his new friends and being away from the likes of Narcissa. He liked the warm common room with its squashy arm chairs and fireplaceā¦Ā
The room was silent for what felt like an eternity to Sirius. His mind was spinning, and he couldnāt look at his friends.Ā āYou will regret this.ā⦠What did that mean? Scared and hurt and panicked, Sirius stood and ran from the Great Hall, through the main doors and out onto the Hogwarts Grounds.
As Molly was looking around the Entrance Hall she was almost knocked over by a familiarĀ black haired blur running out the doors. After getting her footing, she walk back outside and looked around for the retreating student.Ā
