On the topic of New Soul, my headcanons for how borgs and bots work is...
Borgs are not cyborgs, they're not half human half robot. Given what we see in the show, Hacker is completely mechanical.
All borgs and bots are built, some are raised by their creators and some are commissioned by their parents. It's not uncommon for someone's parents that did not build them but still look, sound and act like them. In cyberspace this is not considered adoption but the same as being born into a family.
The difference between a borg and a bot is how humanoid they were and for what purpose they are created. Along with how complex they are made to be, along with a number of other factors.
A borg is a humanoid creation made to be its own person, such as Hacker, Slider, Coop and Creech.
A bot is a mechanical being that is usually made with a singular purpose on mind.
In Cyberspace, the differences are almost entirely made obsolete by the simple fact it in a Universe in which all life, mechanical or not, is given full sentience.
Cyber Organics [Wicked, people of Happily Everafter, people of Castleblanca, etc] are made of code, instead of atoms, they're essentially a program within Cyberspace's database.
Bots are fully capable of becoming their own person. Some are happy with simply being what they were programed to be. Some may develop their own desires and go off to do something entirely different. A bot made to cut hair may see a play and want to become an actor.
While bots are not systematically forced to stick with their programming, there are still creators of said bots who do.
Buzz and Delete were originally workers for a cheese factory, obviously they did not stick with this original purpose.
While Hacker was created to help Motherboard, he was created as a borg to handle the many complicated tasks of protecting her and running Cyberspace. And to a degree, to be Dr. Marbles' equal and partner in aiding Motherboard. When Hacker learned this would not mean he would one day run Cyberspace himself, he went rouge.
Math-bot's purpose is to protect Motherboard in his place and in fact against The Hacker. Despite being a bot, he is fairly complicated. Dr. Marbles is a genius and so is playing a delicate game of keeping Math simple, focused and able to handle many complicated tasks as well.
It will not go well.
Although Dr. Marbles means well, he is definitely someone who underestimates the capabilities of bots. Through this AU he shall grow.
Hacker looks down on bots and cyber-organics, believing borgs are above them all. but of course, he believes himself to be the borg above all borgs. Maybe he'll grow through this AU as well.
Even at the start of these adventures, Math-bot is already developing his own interests and personality. They are just not as clearly seen, especially by his new friends. He's still the same Mattie-boy we all love.
He and Buzz and Delete shall see eye to eye. They are still morally grey characters, but I think their desires are not in villainy and maybe even more complex than "love donuts and bunnies." Usually I see Jackie as being the one with a soft spot for the two, like she just feels bad for others and wants everyone to have an equal chance. In this AU, Math-bot will be able relate to them! Or even be jealous of them. They did break out of their original programming after all and have their own personalities...

The series starts when the three of them are sent out on their very first mission... a trip to the Cybrary! But what is meant to be a simple task turns into the start of their adventures as heroes when the three are tricked into attacking Motherboard and find Dr. Marbles has been kidnapped.
