Midcentury nautical! The North Shore Beach & Yacht Club was the place to be back in the 1960s and 70s! It was designed by Albert Frey and built by developers Ray Ryan and Trav Rogers in 1959. It served as a clubhouse with a marina on the Northeastern shore of the Salton Sea. After falling into disrepair over the intervening years, a result of the Salton Sea’s ecological collapse (that’s a whole other story!), the property was saved and restored in 2010 and is now used as a local community center. A Googie dream in Downey, California. Before this Broiler became Bob’s Big Boy (after being unceremoniously knocked down in 2007, and rebuilt in 2009 from original 1958 blueprints) it was called Harvey’s, and then Johnie’s in 1968! FINAL WEEKEND, ‘Neon Vancouver, Ugly Vancouver’ at @museumofvan ends June 29th. At one time Vancouver boasted over 19,000 neon signs. That’s not a misprint. In 1953, Vancouver reputedly had more neon than any other city on earth, except for Shanghai. One of the world’s leading sign manufacturers, Neon Products ltd., was based in Vancouver and led production from the 1930s through the 60s … but when values later shifted and neon signs were seen as a blight on the city’s natural beauty, by-laws were introduced which pretty much put an end to neon production by the early 1970s. In recent years there’s been a new found appreciation for this retro art form and contemporary neon is once again being created and installed around the city, although sadly only a fraction of Vancouver’s original vintage signs remain. The best place to see illuminated vintage neon in all its restored glory has been at the Museum of Vancouver. For one-stop gawking, the museum’s permanent exhibition “Neon Vancouver, Ugly Vancouver” is well worthwhile for fans of the genre. Sadly, the “permanent” exhibit is coming to an end after many years … June 29th is the last day!
