A college assignment where I did a concept for a version of Edgar Allen Poe's Masque of the Red Death.

I imagined the titular figure appearing in his cloak, somewhat mistakable for just another masked guest, then having the cloak fall away to reveal this weird invertebrate who unfurls, spraying the ballroom with viral juices

As he spews the guests with diseased blood-red discharge, I of course wanted a mouth where cackling was implied. I had fun making the inner appendages semi-transparent as well.

Props to our professor Rebecca for pushing me to go further (wilder, crazier!) than my initial design. I'm glad she did. My first pass was, in retrospect, shamefully simple. It was a lesson that has stuck with me, for better or worse: never be afraid to really go for it, especially when it comes to creatures/characters. No restraint. No good ever came from being grounded in reality.
