Thank you for not sounding like a completely irredeemable asshole Daniel I appreciate it
This is the full email I was sent, I just cut out the greeting cause it had my email in it. You ever just. Get real tired.
For context hereβs the response I sent after his last email.
why is it the customer support for kids games is always the absolute worst. the server host employee who helped me with a support ticket i opened for my website seemed near in tears apologizing for an outage they had no control over. they've always gone above and beyond and i love my host so much. sse used to be like that. what happened?
mister sso, fire him /reference
Sorry reblogging this again and deleting my previous one because it keeps bothering me and I want to unpack it. But first thank you so much for messaging them about it even if you got such a terrible response, it really means more than I can express. Hopefully asking him to send your support ticket to another employee as well as his supervisor results in something.
"Star Stable would never associate any form of religious beliefs onto any creature or person in starstable."
But you do. Like big time. Ignoring the fact religion isn't even the point and Judaism is an enthoreligion (and only became a religion in some aspects because Napoleon wouldn't let us practice our traditions any other way), the game is very culturally Christian. It may not directly be called Christmas anymore, but we all know that's what the winter holiday is. It's filled with Christmas centered traditions. It has a tree and presents. That's a Christmas tree. There's Santa hats. Santa was literally in the game for years. And also the witches?? There are real life practicing witches? Irregardless of whether you believe that's possible or not, it's still a thing. Mysticism type things are very much practiced by real people.
"Antisemitism just isn't something that we have added to the game."
If you aren't Jewish, you don't get to decide that. Period. You do not define antisemitism.
"Goblins are a fantasy creatures that don't exist. They exist within pages of magical stories. Goblins and Trolls are derived from a similar fantasy so changing any name from goblin to troll isn't solving anything. An imp is also just a smaller goblin. Calling a goblin an elf is also somewhat wrong. When I say elf i think if the beautiful human-like people with pointy ears and shiny hair."
Lots to unpack with this one. Okay. Fantasy and folklore, particularly European fantasy and folklore, which is what the game draws influence from, and which is where goblins come from, is filled with antisemitism. I can't emphasize enough how antisemitic Europe and the Grimm Brothers were. Goblins and trolls absolutely do not derive from similar places. Goblins were initially a Germanic fae creature. Trolls likely come from Norwegian witch folklore. He's right in that changing the name alone wont fix things, because they need to also NOT BE FUCKING GREEN. Imps have similar fae origins to goblins, but they aren't a fantasy creature historically been used as an antisemitic caricature. The only vaguely maybe antisemitic imp connection I've seen is grimmsnarl in Pokemon. The caprans in the game are called elves several times, and elves also have fae origins like goblins.
"Again I appreciate your concern. Star stable would never insinuate that Jews are Goblins and that isn't what we have done during our character development process."
No one said SSO insinuated Jewish people are goblins. We're saying the game perpetuated an antisemitic version of goblins. SSO took an element of folklore without researching it, the antisemitism may not have been done intentionally but that is the result.
"I think you will be able to overlook the antisemitism, for one reason, jews are not goblins, that's absolutely ridiculous."
Telling someone to overlook antisemitism is gross. Noticing it is our survival. Telling someone to overlook racism, which antisemitism is a form of, is like telling the frog to ignore the water is getting hotter. This issue is relatively low stakes and not serious, but it's part of a culture that normalizes it. Ignoring that while antisemitism is rising makes it worse. I think this is part of a language barrier issue but also, this is a bit of an admittance?

ah. goblin uprising,,,,, pesky, green, greedy capran-looking-but-not-actually-caprans that cannot be trusted who rose up against the good, nice caprans,,,,,,,, sse why
they're literally ruining christmas. with their greed. sse. SSE.
I'm not Jewish myself but I do belong to a couple of minority demographics that receive denigration for one reason or another, along with people trying to speak for me.
My only real advice is that there comes a point where it's no longer "defending the oppressed" and more infantilization. There is such a thing as being too sensitive. This is a kid's game, not propaganda meant to encourage hatred. Same as any other demographic, Jewish people can speak on their own behalf. They don't need others' help, they only need a listening ear. To do anything else is risking spoiling the fun for everyone including those you're trying to speak for.
Also "goblin" as far as I've seen is as much an umbrella term as anything else. Jewish people don't hold a cultural copyright on financial greed and hooked noses. (may I direct you to dragons and stereotypical witches respectively) I could probably name a dozen other fairy tale and mythological creatures that have such traits.
Suggesting that SSO's new little green goblin (Grinch? Norman Osborn?) is a caricature of Jewish people makes as much sense as saying the orcs in Tolkien's legendarium represent black people or that the white walkers from ASOIAF represent white people, aka little to no sense once you look past the surface. The comparison of Jewish people and goblins alone could be deemed borderline antisemitic in itself. It's misguided, but forgivable.
Worry more about enjoying the game and less about whether SSO is offending a group who are more than capable of defending themselves in a kid's game. β€οΈ
Okay I donβt blame you for assuming Iβm not Jewish because apparently I havenβt mentioned that here yet even though I (mis)remembered I had, but this still feels really weird to send? Telling someone whoβs not part of a minority to not speak for them is absolutely okay, the job of people outside a minority is to raise up their voices, not add their own, so I have no issue with that aspect and I am genuinely sorry thatβs been done to you, but why are you, someone who by your own words isnβt Jewish, speaking on if goblins antisemitic or not at all? You are speaking for/over us there, and you would be even if I wasnβt Jewish.
I am Jewish, and obviously while we arenβt a monolith, no group of people is, I personally find this depiction of goblins (green and greedy/thief) antisemitic, and with much of the world going mask off with their antisemitism right now Iβm not as open to giving benefits of the doubt as I used to be. I do believe this was a mistake on SSOβs part and not intentional as I said in a reblog, but that doesnβt make it any less harmful or antisemitic.
I have done quite a bit of research into the history of goblins and when they began to be used as an antisemitic caricature (as early as the 1800s thanks to the Goblin Market poem, which is just classic blood libel) because I make dice as a job and I want to enjoy D&D without antisemitism and the whole dice goblin thing, and there is a very large connection. This isn't unfounded.
Youβre right in that goblins are a bit of an umbrella term, they are, which is why itβs important to let the antisemitic version of them die. You can have goblins that are just mischievous, not green, big nosed, greedy, sneaky, and untrustworthy. Itβs really easy to not have antisemitic goblins, but unfortunately the antisemitic version is a mainstream staple and that doesnβt just go away overnight.
If you apply harmful stereotypes to anything, even if it was completely harmless before, youβre going to get a harmful caricature. Thatβs what happened to goblins, and thatβs what SSO did with the Snow Goblins. They took the popular depiction which is the antisemitic version, and applied it to the game without a thought because itβs been normalized to the point most people donβt even consider it may have less than great origins. Like Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel. Theyβre so normal the vast majority of people donβt even realize they were created for antisemitic reasons. Antisemitism is sneakily within a lot of things. You donβt start recognizing it until you become familiar with the tropes and stereotypes.
Iβm also going to bet if theyβre European in origin, the βdozen other fairy tale and mythological creatures that have such traitsβ you could name also had that done to them if they werenβt antisemitic to begin with. And since you mentioned them, itβs also what was done to the stereotypical version of witches, which is antisemitic and has a very long history of such going back to accused women who were burned being forced to wear Jewish clothing of the time as further humiliation. Itβs also where the classic pointy hat comes from, since a pointy cone hat was what we were forced to wear to signify we were Jewish. Witches actually share a lot with goblins in antisemitic traits and SSO also needs to address Pi hitting all but the green skin.
You clearly know a little about the issue, as you brought up The Nose when I didn't, but you also don't know nearly enough to speak about this at all as evidenced by you not knowing the antisemitic history regarding witches, so please don't. And I never said they were a Jewish caricature, I said they were antisemitic, there's a difference. A Jewish caricature is the happy merchant meme.
What we're also not going to do is the whole 'you're the antisemitic one for seeing Jewish people in goblins' thing. That has and always will be an utterly bullshit dismissive argument. The whole point of this kind of caricature is to normalize the stereotypes so when they're actually applied to people you don't blink an eye, like how very few goyim blinked an eye at Mother Gothel in Tangled. I'm currently sick so I really don't have all the smart brain power to go into that right now and I hope someone else can. It's not antisemitic to notice when antisemitic caricatures have been applied to something. That's a very good thing to notice actually, and I want more goyim to start noticing that.
So it does actually make more sense than someone saying those things (which I don't think I've ever seen someone argue??), which I'll get into under the cut to clear up any confusion about how SSO's Snow Goblins tie into the antisemitic depictions, since a couple people were confused in my initial post.
And I am worrying more about enjoying the game; that's the whole reason I brought this up, because I'd like to enjoy a game that's been with me for more than half my life and means a lot to me, and this is preventing me from fully doing that.
Again, I am genuinely sorry people have spoken over and for you. That is wrong and not at all okay. And I'm sorry if I misread the tone of your ask.
hey sso could you please call the snow goblins literally ANYTHING else. snow imps is right there. a green little thief called a goblin is not cute, itβs antisemitism and we really donβt need more of that right now
its interesting bc the model is literally just a capran... they made the fur green and called it a goblin? why add in another badly thought out thing to sso's lore instead of just saying its another mischievous capran like all the other ones, if its gonna look exactly the same anyway? x_X there was no need to call this a goblin at all
(i doubt they had any intention of antisemitism and i think they might change the word if ppl send in messages to support, theyve been pretty good at responding about this type of thing in the past)
yeah exactly, you get it! they could have just gone with mischievous capran and not made them green, that would have been just fine. they could have also done away with the βthey got away!β mechanic (really forgetting what fun is here sso jesus) and had a benign little rapscallion just messing with you a bit (i donβt think it was intentional either but itβs still a massive oversight. hopefully enough people mention it so it gets a change)
I know we always talk about MC being the fifth wheel among the Soul Riders, but... do you think Anne ever feels like it's actually her? She was missing for at least a few months, going by canon, and in the meantime, her three best friends found someone else to save the world with who's about as competent as the four of them combined - and the four of them have been saving the world together since shortly after she disappeared. Imagine if she found out what Fripp said days after meeting MC - that they don't need her, just four Soul Riders of which one is proficient in the Sun Circle. Do you think, maybe, that she has found out? (Damn Fripp, damn the Druids, and damn Aideen?) Not to mention that while she was gone, her horse died and then came back as a foal - something extremely upsetting all in its own right - and very nearly bonded with the Soul Rider of the Sun Circle that came before Anne. (Does she know about that..?)
Anyway, what I'm saying is like. Anne is realistically already struggling with a need to always come out on top - take one look at her childhood and teenagehood and tell me I'm wrong. I don't think she finds it's the greatest thing in the world that a complete stranger has, at least in her perception of the eyes of the Druids, taken her place - best-case scenario, only in the Druids' mission to save Jorvik, and worst-case scenario, as the fourth member of the Soul Riders not only in mission, but in friendship and in sisterhood. All of these people have gone through so much and she hasn't been there to see any of it, because she was stuck in a crystal in a parallel dimension that both causes you to lose track of reality and time and not only can, but will, physically harm you to the point of threatening your life. Quite frankly, it's a miracle she's standing and walking and talking and not losing her absolute shit. Her actions may not be good, or rational, but she's handling this so well that I feel like she honestly just has yet to crack.
Galloper i love you but this yearβs Halloween questline was ass. Im sorry. Why did they pull a new ghost guy out of nowhere, show two of gallopers memories without any context (literally like unless u read the newest comic how the hell would you know what was happening in those), and then decide that gallopers alive not because of the witches curse but because of this random guy??? Oh and then it ends because galloper shows up and evaporates him. And Linda does a buzzfeed unsolved outro βwill we ever know what happened to galloper, for now it will remain unsolvedβ and it ends. Roll credits at 10 minutes of gameplay
Maybe im being a bit harsh but the story felt like it was going in a very solid direction that made sense and then? This ghost guy shows up and changes everything? But not in a fun way in a contradicting and confusing way
I did enjoy the segment where the ghost gives directions i thought it was funny.

Hot take I guess but kids games should be accessible to kids. Thereβs school right now. At minimum theyβre going to have homework, and as you get into high school, thatβs nothing to scoff at. There seems to be more and more homework each year and even a few things can take hours because the school system, at least in America is fucking stupid. Then thereβs extracurricular activities, chores, jobs, etc. even if youβre in a place where the school system is less shit. Thereβs not a lot of free time, and another hot take, events shouldnβt be stressful. Kids shouldnβt have to worry theyβll lose this chance to get this one tack set that will be so perfect for their horse, or a cute pet that really makes them smile. Almost all the events of SSO have been so terribly grindy and stressfully unpleasant for years now but this one really takes the cake.
I think grinding is something in games that in itself should be highly reconsidered as a fairly staple element because itβs almost never implemented as something pleasant, but having this kind of grind outside of an event would be acceptable. The events are short and limited and the tasks are not at all compatible with the time frame the average person is going to have to dedicate to a buggy horse game thatβs been going downhill for years.
Yes!
I like to play for hours sometimes but lately I cant. A lot of stuff have happend and I cant play more that 20 - 30 minutes a day. Some days I cant play at all.
I loved Gallopers gambit last year. But this time it takes too long for him to show up that I just skipped doing it. And I didnt loose anything by skipping it.
When I was a kid and in school I often didnt have time to play games except on weekends. But back then I didnt play any online games that had time events so I never had to worry. Its suppouse to be a game to have fun with. Not stress about.
Yes!! All of this!
Galloperβs Gambit was so fun last year and worked well, for me at least, while also going through the Haunted Trail Ride. It was a fantastic two in one kind of thing. I believe it had a thirty minute cap on showing up. I timed it last year and he usually showed up at around the 25 minute mark. This year he takes around 40. The one time he didnβt, I was taking a trailer. Not only does he take ages to show up, they didnβt really tune it to when he shouldnβt show up very well at all. Skipping it is definitely for the best. Itβs just a waste of shards very needed for that pumpkin they forgot to add in initially that youβre also not likely to get if youβve not been logging in daily because the quest increases the chances.
Another thing I want to mention, is that even though Iβm my own boss and make my own hours (I make dice) I still donβt have all the time in the world to dedicate to the game. Executive dysfunction doesnβt like cooperating even for fun things, especially when they turn stressful. I also have OCD, and that leads to intense distress in regards to missing limited items. I as an adult who is aware of my OCD and how it affects me is able to sit there and know that itβs in no way logical and that the game will not be forever ruined because I missed a saddle and now the set wonβt be complete and itβll never feel right, but a kid is not likely to know that. Even with knowing that, itβs still led to years of me stressing out over not being able to do the events all the time. Horses are big with neurodivergent people. Itβs not a stretch to say that along with everything else, SSO is going to be a very big attraction to those who are neurodivergent. The limited time grind aspect is already going to stress neurotypical kids who are often still learning to grasp that kind of thing, let alone neurodivergent kids who can have an extra urgency with things like that.
SSO doesnβt mention items will be back the next year. They usually are, but they arenβt always. New players, which are what SSO are trying to target, arenβt going to know that unless they did deep. Most players arenβt on Instagram, Reddit, Tumblr, etc. where there are communities who can tell them that. Because thereβs a money aspect to some items, that also feels predatory. SSO is ridiculous with its Star Coin prices and getting those items is not cheap. Itβs just a gross design all around.
I think theΒ βunlock it with soul shardsβ aspect would have worked if the things they unlocked had been new and so thereβd be more anticipation (So new players probably didnβt experience the same frustrations old players did). I genuinely think it wouldβve been more worth it if unlocking the portals also did something new or changed the player experience somehow.Β
Like βOh because the portals are broken, halloween canβt come to jorvik. Fix them to bring halloween back!β MThe pumpkin hunt in golden hills being unlocked meant pumpkin decorations get placed across jorvik. The witch race being unlocked led to the witches by silverglade castle appearing as well as the other standard halloween decoration etc. Just giving us something to grind for other than recycled stuff and it probably wouldβve been okay? Not GOOD, but fine.
Not only that, the unlock thresholds were also far too high even with the added activities. If you only have time to do one tornado and one Galloperβs Gambit every day, youβll spend at least two weeks unlocking the portals even if youβre lucky enough to come across a few shards in the races or in the Keep (if Iβm recalling the total amount of soul shards required for portal unlocking correctly as about 100). Thatβs not even accounting for the fact that the Gambit wasnβt added until the second week, or the frequency of Karin requesting shards for the cauldron. Then thereβs the added stress of knowing every day you donβt unlock a portal is a day you miss out on literal, actual player XP. The only way to unlock the portals within any reasonable timeframe this event has been to use the tornado bug to get more shards, and that grind (and the pressure to keep up with all the daily activities for, I reiterate, literal, actual player XP) is probably why this Halloween event gave so many people SSO burnout.
Yeah no 100% all of that as well, this entire event was horrendous. I was specifically talking about the aspect of needing to unlock last yearβs material asdfghj
