i absolutely believe tom was envious of harry; he got the loving parents, the wealthy inheritance, and got dumped with his aunt instead of getting sent to the orphanage. he also got the better reputation compared to tom; his mother might’ve been a mudblood but she was a magnificent witch and his father came from a respected/liked pureblood family whereas tom had a shameful wizarding family (known to have squandered off all their money and living in the muggle world) and a muggle father who wanted nothing to do with him.

i think it’s interesting how harry’s nepotism comes to play because most of his fame generally comes from him “defeating” the big bad dark lord when he was a child. imo, you can’t really say he used his nepotism in school because there wasn’t anything to use it for (he got onto the quidditch team bc he was an excellent seeker, his grades were slightly above average but that’s not because the teachers favoured him, you could argue slug club was nepotism but he didn’t even want to be there 😭) and when he’s finally in a position to utilise nepotism (i.e. in the workplace), he’s well earned and deserved his position because he’s the hero who defeated lord voldemort once again.

i find it hard to believe he didn’t do something about it. i highly doubt tom would keep wearing tattered clothes, he would’ve acquired different ones by any means necessary. image is so so important to the average person, i don’t imagine it would be something tom would ignore considering who he is. now i dont think its difficult at all to fix his state, he could’ve easily earned money to buy new clothes, stolen new clothes by using magic and/or fashioned himself new clothes by using magic. it’s rather easy for someone as accomplished as him.

i’m honestly quite curious about this as well, i looked it up and during the 1920s, couples weren’t allowed to get married under the age of 21 without the consent of their parents (and the wiki pages of merope and tom sr state they were both respectively born in 1907 and 1905 meaning merope was probably 18 which would make tom sr 20). my theory is tom sr would’ve paid off whoever he needed to and the marriage would’ve happened (it’s also very extremely possible that the marriage was null and void and i would presume that was the case tbh).

other than that why would a church refuse merope based on her looks, aren’t churches meant to be accepting of the needy? harry described merope as looking defeated and the ministry employee who visited the gaunts and mrs cole (as well as tom sr i think) expressed pity towards her so if anything they’d probably help her out. she wasn’t necessarily beautiful but she looked plain and had cross eyed which wasn’t super rare.

This leads me to wonder, okay, we know that Tom will realize his origins and that he is the heir around year four, and he will begin to implement his plan in year five, and yes, we continue... but in this case, we return to the reader. For example, both are orphans, and Tom has found his identity, but how would things be different if, for example, (the reader were mugle born, or half-blood, or pure-blood—not necessarily from the 28th?

personally, i adoreeeeee the childhood love/friends to lovers trope. i think it's the best foundation for a relationship and it can truly create many entertaining scenarios that a writer can work with. do i love this trope with tom? absolutely. i think tom needs it tbh, he does not strike me as the type to desire a romantic relationship with a stranger (my demiromantic/sexual diva) so if it blossomed naturally between him and a friend? chefs kiss !!

i could see tom accidentally befriending the new girl who joined. it probably plays out like this — she obviously must have suffered an incredible loss to have to be passed onto the orphanage which i imagine would leave her very sad/depressed/quiet/withdrawn, all traits tom would have no problem with (and would probably desire in his fellow peers). kids don't really do well with reserved children so i assume after the initial interest in something new coming to their orphanage, they'd be put off by her and probably isolate her or at least ignore her which would probably leave her with tom. i believe he'd probably be bored one day and ask her a question or if she'd like to do something 'fun' with him and she'd say yes and boom, friendship formed and they're inseparable. add magic to the equation and now they're being referred to as thing 1 and thing 2.

i do think it's unfair to believe that with the addition of this unknown variable all events would continue to occur as usual. unfortunately (or fortunately!), this addition would disrupt canon as we know it. like all things considered, if the butterfly effect (or chaos theory in general) can occur by the change of something as miniscule as a minute, then imagine how much can differ by the addition of a whole new person who in this case directly affects tom. i believe that by the inclusion of reader we'd have a very different tom. so maybe he decides to find out his heritage sooner, maybe he decides he'll figure it out after hogwarts. maybe he never tries to find out in the first place, we don't know what might happen because there are so many paths that could be taken.

*ੈ✩˚ i know we’re meant to believe they’re strongly into cousin marriages but i like to believe that ended in the 19th century and they’ve actually ventured out so that all of them married into other pureblood families however, walburga was the exception. she was forced to marry orion because she was caught having multiple relationships with different guys and to save face, the family married her off to orion.

*ੈ✩˚ i honestly don’t think they’d be willing to give up their last name and take their husbands. i think the house of black are proud individuals raised to think their name is something extremely valuable, i cannot really see them being willing to take some fuckass man’s last name if they were a woman. fuck societal standards, the most she’d do is hyphen it if she was truly in love (for e.g. narcissa black-malfoy instead of narcissa malfoy)

*ੈ✩˚ absolutely no one in the black family knows how to cook and if they tried it would be disastrous (the main reason why they need house elves, otherwise they would fr starve to death)

*ੈ✩˚ they do rituals during full moons as a family which is the reason behind the power of their magic. i think they’re very in touch with it and absolutely nourish it and cherish it. i also think their affinity with naming their kids after celestial bodies is no coincidence at all (power of names and whatnot)

*ੈ✩˚ i think a lot of the cousins are genuinely raised as siblings/best friends (lucretia and walburga being besties is canon to me; alphard 100% saw orion as a younger brother since he was very close to cygnus is age; bellatrix and andromeda adored sirius, narcissa liked regulus more because they were the youngest of their siblings and generally similar)

i think the house of black did fit in with the others, i also think that marrying into it would’ve probably been something many people desired? they were one of the wealthiest families to exist and had a lot of prestige (they might have been crazy with their ideologies but passion was good right?….)
