I was genuinely floored to learn that when Americans talk about "respecting Veterans" or getting a "Veteran's discount" or whatever the fuck they aren't talking about disabled old men who fought in the Second World War, they're talking about like. War criminals???? Vietnam, Iraq, things of that nature????? Like, in the UK you rarely get the occasional weirdo who wants to throw their support behind the people who did war crimes in Ireland but when you talk about veterans here the first thought is always old guys. Which, sure, it's still definitely worth interrogating how that kind of reverence can and has been used as a propaganda tool but it's radically more reasonable on the face of it than whatever America is doing.
