A Mission-Minded Nurse

Yes, I know of many brilliant sayings and quotations about mothers. They praise the bravery, industry, care, and love of mothers. Yes. These are indeed true!

For me, a mother is the one who have carried you since conception. She is the one who held your hands since birth. She is the one who saw your first infant smile.

A mother is a complete package. True and abounding love comes from a mother.

In life, I have learned that our mother should be valued, loved, and respected.

Last Sabbath, May 10, Adventists and friends from around Metro Manila gathered at the Cuneta Astrodome for a day of worship and celebration. In fact, thousands were present during that time.

The worship started with a time of musical presentations and songs. Then, Cesar Montano and Sandra Seifert shared their testimonies to everybody. The summary of the lesson quarterly was given by Pastor Hermogenes Villanueva, Southern Asia-Pacific Division Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Director. 

Then, we, One Year in Mission- SSD, were so fortunate to have been committed to the Lord by Elder Ted Wilson before the start of the Hour of Worship.

Dr. Peter Landless and Elder Ted Wilson were the speakers during the Hour of Worship.

Because of the passion of Elder Ted Wilson for urban evangelism, he is now personally in Manila, Philippines to conduct the Hope Manila 2014: Revelation of Hope from May 4-17, 2014 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

Elder Ted Wilson is the Seventh-day Adventist world church President. He is a humble man serving God in different fields for many years.

This event at PICC includes a health expo from 6-7pm. Followed by the health lecture of Dr. Peter Landless, Health Ministries Director of the General Conference. Then the Revelation of Hope series by Elder Ted Wilson. The program usually ends at 9pm.

Let me share to you my observations:

1. I am so blessed to be a part of this great and once-in-a-lifetime event. And I am so happy to have met and talked to the world church President. It was indeed an opportunity.

2. I have seen many friends who are coming in the nightly meetings at PICC. The efforts of our Adventist friends are now slowly coming into fruition.

3. I pray that this event will make a great impact in Metro Manila and by that we can replicate this type of event in Central Philippines.

Last Sunday, May 4, Simply Foods PH in coordination with the Health Ministries Department of North Philippine Union Conference (NPUC) and One Year in Mission-SSD, held a Health and Wellness Fair at Harbour Square, CCP Complex, Manila. It was a success with hundreds of people joining the event.

The event showcased healthy fruit and drink treats from Simply Foods PH, a cooking show with VegeCapable, and the health expo.

Let me share to you my realizations:

1. Health fairs can be an awesome avenue for mingling and friendship with other people. If we conduct it regularly, it's influence will be far-reaching.

2. The health ministries department of the church should be the prime mover of this type of event by gathering exhibitors and participants.

Last April 28 and 29, the SSD-International Field School of Urban Evangelism (IFSUE) had the VegeCapable Training and Workshop that was led by Pastor Abraham Carpena, SSD Health Ministries Director and Dr. Blecenda Varona, NeedHealth Consultancy Director. It was a fun-filled workshop because the program is dynamic and interactive.

Let me share my observations and thoughts:

1. Nutrition is very vital to our health and to the health of our community as well. Therefore through this topic, we have a great chance in reaching and connecting to other people.

2. I realized that we can do something like this in our church and community. And it is very relevant anytime and anywhere.

Last Saturday, April 26, Pasay Adventist Church's Project Grow conducted a Symposium on Reaching Urban Young Professionals at the Heritage Center in Raffles Building, Ortigas Center. It was a fruitful day for me and I have learned a lot!

Let me share to you my thoughts:

1. Urban missions should be focused on reaching urbanites either young or old. Big or developing cities should be in focus too.

2. Metro Manila is a beautiful pattern for urban ministry in the Philippines. I am so happy to see the progress of the work of God here.

3. The millenials are growing in number in the cities today. They need to be understood by those people who are trying to reach them.

4. In order to reach the people in the city, it is important to know that we are all sinners and we all need a Savior who is Jesus Christ.

Last April 17, Thursday, the Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD) - International Field School of Urban Evangelism (IFSUE) started at the Conference Hall of North Philippine Union Conference in Pasay City, Philippines. This big event is a month long class and field work that will emphasize more on working in the cities. This is a program under the Mission to the Cities initiative of the Office of Adventist Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In the past few days, the speakers expounded on the topics on reaching the Chinese, Buddhists, and Muslims. Other speakers also talked about Adventist Community Services and Urban Evangelism. 

The One Year in Mission - SSD team is the manpower behind this event. And we are also official delegates for IFSUE.

Last April 16, Wednesday, the Team Eagles of One Year in Mission - SSD led the culmination program of the Eagles' Care Group in Harbour Square.

Many people attended the event including our care group friends, brethren from Pasay Adventist Church, and the International Field School of Urban Evangelism delegates from Central Philippines. It was a privilege to have the presence of Pastor Doug Venn, the Adventist Mission director of Southern Asia-Pacific Division.

The program included introduction of friends, testimonies, inspirational message, and the birthday wishes to the celebrants.
