l'm sure he's fine...
It's @invisobang time! I'm so excited to share my pieces this year.
I had the pleasure of working with @plainclothesdisaster for their AMAZING fic. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to work with such a wonderful storyteller. Be on the lookout for pt. 2 in the next couple weeks 🤩
You can find the fic here
There's nothing worse than when the concept for a piece of media feels like it was tailor-made for you in a lab but then you actually watch/read it and it turns out to be dreadful. The betrayal. The utterly dashed hopes. The annoyance that now you can't even write a good version of the concept because then everyone will go "Oh just like X!" and you will have to Bite them.
so i started with doing requests from the last scales post and then became woefully carried away

As both the World Wars and Tolkien recede from living memory I feel like there's room in the fantasy-doorstopper space for someone to do a story about a decaying, hegemonic fantasy nation that's been coasting on an internal narrative about how they beat the dark lord and the evil empire a generation ago, with basically every bad thing that's gone down since then being the result of someone growing up on those stories trying to pattern match whatever bullshit they're about to enact to that last wonderful moment of collective moral clarity
People love characters with low / no empathy or are apathetic about everything until they actually meet someone like that. Suddenly the person in question is horrible and abusive.
characters going “we were lovers once”: eh, it’s okay i guess. it’s nice enough
characters going “we were friends once”: absolutely devastating. one hit knockout i’m gone
getting violently ill btw
Im so so so so sorry

oh you're in a horror film/book and your phone died/has no bars? how boring. I think phones in horror SHOULD work. they should ding only to have the protagonist check and find nothing. they should get calls from somebody you don't know but is still somehow in your contacts. google maps should lead you to one place, no matter what address you type in.
phones are such a big part of our daily lives, removing them from horror removes the horror from our experience. what if the horror felt like it could happen to you, right here, right now? what if it felt like it was already happening?
call 911 and something that is definitely not a person picks up.
call 911 and get an operator only for the call to become increasingly weirder and more sinister until you realize that whatever picked up is not there to help.
text messages from someone who's dead. voicemails that sound like dead air until you turn the volume all the way up.
emergency alerts for weather that doesn't happen on earth.
Your phone rings - but it's your phone number on the screen. You answer it, but all you hear is heavy, laboured breathing. You go to say something, only to hear your voice on the other end tell you "It's too late," and hang up.
You get a message from a number you don't recognise. It's a picture of you from behind. You turn and see there's nobody there. When you look back at your phone, you see the sender has sent another text - "Sorry, wrong number."
Your phone rings - it's a private number. You answer it, only to feel the sensation of something licking your ear.
You wake up to find a voicemail. You play it back, only to hear an autotuned version of your own voice reciting a Bible passage - 1 Peter 2: 18-20.
You get an emergency alert. It says "I'm sorry."
every time you try to call anyone, the version of you that didn't get trapped in the hell maze picks up instead, and she's getting increasingly scared and angry to hear from you
As a former 911 operator I love the idea of the call just getting increasingly creepy.
Especially because depending on the issue we already ask some pretty detailed questions.
Imagine they ask you to describe the suspect and they just randomly correct you, "are you sure the shirt is red not blue?"
Or you tell them you're hiding alone in the closet and they just casually go "go hmm that's funny cuz that's where I'm hiding "
My two yr old is looking through a book about prehistoric art and she saw a picture of those cave painting of hands and she held up her own and said "hand!" And I gotta be honest. That hit
Oh my god, this reminds me of the childrens garden of our local botanical garden. There’s one section that’s called the prehistoric lives garden or smth, and it’s full of native plants that indigenous people 2000 years ago would have eaten and used as medicine, etc. And within this little garden, there’s an adobe style playhouse, which for some reason (probably lighting reasons) has no roof, which means the rusty red dirt floor is often quite muddy.
And this series of events has led to my favorite interactive art piece ever.
Handprints.
Little tiny handprints at the bottom. Big teenager and adult sized handprints at the top. Handprints upon handprints upon handprints, a modern day continuation of an ancient tradition.
Most of the people who contributed were probably doing so because they thought it would be fun, not for any deep philosophical reason. Heck, you can tell based on the height of the larger handprints that their owners were having a jumping competition. They didn’t think about the fact that they were creating art in the exact same way the earliest humans created art. They didn’t think about the fact that humans have always been and will always be humans, and the ways we interact with each other and the world have always stayed the same in the most important ways.
But I did. I thought about it. And I am in love with humanity all over again.

I really like how this one turned out <3
