Guys I am so sorry I have not been posting. I just cannot think about any ideas all I'm thinking about is an arranged marriage story or anne boleyn x little puma which do not work at all for this story so I am so sorry about this! I have been having some anxiety because of school starting so that might have also played a part but please give me suggestions of what you'll like me to do with this story!
Chapter 6: The Fever
Chapter 6: The Fever
(Sidenote: Please tell me this is not just me who looks exactly like this photo when they get sick of any small thing?)
THEÂ next day Clara awoke to chaos, Mary had fallen ill to the intermittent fever. Charles and Caroline dropped like dominoes after her. Laura and Clara thankfully did not, however that meant that the responsibility of taking care of all 3 of them fell on both of their shoulders.
Clara was a very bad nurse and had very little experience with taking care of sick people. That was because she had grown up with butlers and maids to take care of everything, but she knew couldn't allow Laura seeing her nervous or afraid.Â
Poor Laura was only 8 years old and now she had to take care of her parents and sister. "No" Clara thought to herself. She couldn't let that happen. She was going to make sure to take most of the responsibilities to make sure Laura was not stressed or does something incorrectly that she would regret for the rest of her life.Â
"Laura, do you know how to ride a horse?" Clara asked with surprising calmness.Â
"No" replied Laura.Â
--"I need you to listen to me very carefully, okay?"
Laura nodded with the utmost determination.Â
--"I am going to go to town to fetch Dr. Tann. You are going to stay here and make sure to keep them hydrated and have a cold cloth on their heads. Can you do that?"Â
--"I can"
--"I promise I'll be quick"Â
As Clara quickly told her goodbye, she went outside and got on one of the horses. She quickly regretted her decision because she realized she did not know the way to the town from out here. She rode as quickly as possible to find a house to ask for help. She stumbled upon a house and knocked. No answer.
Clara opened the door, she found small kittens eating and a doll. That doll belonged to Good Eagle. She wondered whether she should leave because she wasn't sure if White Sun liked her or not. White Sun was in fact Little Puma's sister, and Clara was not getting along with him at all.Â
"Julia, Julia is that you?" White Sun called as she propped herself up with her hands.
--"No, it's me Clara Gillis" Clara answered as she walked into the room from where the voice came.Â
Clara froze as she saw that Good Eagle was pale in one side of the bed and shivering. White Sun was the same. They also caught the fever.
White Sun laid back down on the bed. "Who's with you?"
--"No one" Clara replied. "The Ingalls have got the fever, I was wondering if Mr. Mitchell could take me to see Dr. Tann."Â
--"William went out of town for work. Won't be back for days"Â
--"Oh"Â
"Mama? I need more water"Â Good Eagle muttered weakly in Osage.Â
Clara didn't know what she had said until she saw White Sun reach for the jug of water.Â
"I'll get it" she said as White Sun rested against the pillow once more. Clara filled a cup with water and moved towards Good Eagle. She carefully helped her drink the water. After that she gave her the doll so she would hug. Clara went back to her spot near White Sun.Â
"Would you like some?"
White Sun nodded and Clara helped her drink the water.Â
"I need to get help for you and the Ingalls, but I don't know the way to town. Could you please give me directions? I promise to get help to you as soon as possible."Â
--"Not alone"Â
--"I have Jack with me. Please"Â
White Sun gave in and gave her the directions to town.Â
"Thank you so much. Do you need anything before I leave?"Â
"Just more water.." Clara did as she asked.
Afterwards, Clara got on a horse and quickly started going to town with the directions that she was given. Thankfully she met Dr. Tann on the road with Ms. Aubert, because she started feeling all cold but with sweat running down her forehead. She got off of the horse and walked towards them.
"Dr. Tann! The Ingalls... have the... fever, so do... the Mitchells...." Clara said while short of breath before she fainted.Â
(A/N: Okay so this is just a short chapter because I wanted to keep the storyline about the fever. Also I have a question, can any of you guys please give me tips on how to write longer? I am so used to writing academically and making sure to give just the very necessary details but now when I'm writing a story I'm struggling to make it longer. ALSO GUYS I AM SO SORRY IF IM AWKWARD IN THE REPLIES I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S UP WITH ME AND THOSE TERRIBLE REPLIES. Anyways I hope you enjoyed it and I'll try to write the next chapter soon but for some reason everytime I say I will post it I jinx myself and end up not so it's a maybe rn)
Chapter 5: Heartbroken
Chapter 5: Heartbroken
TÂ oday was the day the girls started lessons with Caroline at home. I finished my lessons at school a long time ago. I didn't want to stay because I sensed the tension between the two girls and I was better off away, so I decided to go with Charles to run some errands. Charles taught me how to ride a horse, and I got the hang of it very quickly. We bid goodbye to Caroline and the girls and promised not to take longer than a few hours.Â
Meanwhile, back home the girls did have a fight and Laura was sent to get water from the creek while Mary swept the floor. As Laura returned, she found the door slightly opened. Inside was two osage men, Little Puma and his friend Myron, with Caroline and Mary huddled up in a corner. Laura being Laura told them hello in Osage and offered them some cornbread.Â
"Take anything you want and leave" Caroline said from the corner where she was huddled up with Mary. Myron did as she said.Â
(italics is what is said in Osage)
"You're being greedy"Â argued Little Puma.
"She said to take whatever we want"Â countered Myron.
--"I doubt she meant all their food"Â
--"These people move into our land. Build homes with our trees, offer us jam made with our blackberries. You call it greedy, I call it fair."Â
Little Puma stays silent and instead gives a treat to Jack. He tells Laura a story the Osage have about dogs but Laura couldn't understand because he told it in Osage. He stays quiet for a moment. "That's enough. Let's go." Little Puma tells Myron and he wraps it up but he takes Ma's doll and Clara's doll.Â
Laura tries to argue for them to put it back but Caroline tells her to leave it. Both of the young men leave the house and Caroline quickly goes to close the door and locks it. The two girls embrace their mother and Mary cries from the fear she experienced. They all had a good scare from that.Â
Charles and I return full of glee from the trip, however as Charles calls out for Caroline there was no answer, we both sense that something was wrong because that wasn't like Caroline. Charles knocks on the door when he notices that it was locked. When the door opens we see a shaken Mary, Charles asks what happened and she tells us what happened. I shocked at what I heard, I couldn't believe that they took the dolls as well. Charles go to see Caroline while I embraced the girls reassuring them that everything was alright. Charles goes outside to retrieve the dolls.
"I'm coming with you" I tell him full of determination.Â
"I don't think you should Clara" He tells me.Â
"My doll was also stolen, it's only fair"Â
He looks into my eyes and decides not to argue further. He agrees and we get into our horses once more as we ride towards Mitchell's house.Â
We arrive at Mitchell's house, we didn't know that inside Little Puma was getting scold by his older sister, White Sun. We knock on the door and Mitchell answers the door. From the opening, I see Little Puma with the dolls and other things. I look up to his eyes that were already looking into mine, he quickly leaves from the back door. It takes me a minute to process what I just saw but I get on my horse and go after him. He was already at a greater distance from me but because I had been a quick learner with riding a horse I catch up at him very quickly. I stop my horse sideways in front of his, he looks surprised for a second before resuming his stern face again.Â
"Why?" I ask him as I try to keep the betrayal I was feeling hidden from my voice and features.Â
"Because you stole our land" He replies with a stern and angry voice.
I stayed quiet for a moment because he was right, I didn't know what to say against that. "I'm sorry" I murmured. He stayed quiet however.Â
"But why would you do that to my house? I thought we were friends" I admit with sadness in my voice and eyes.Â
"We are not friends, I would never be friends with someone like you" He replies harshly, but returns the dolls to me. He rides away immediately after.Â
Little Puma knew he had been harsh but he couldn't let Clara suspect or know that the only reason he had agreed to go with Myron to the Ingall's house was because he had hoped to see her.Â
Clara stays put for a moment in her horse watching him ride away, tears streaming from her eyes despite trying to hold them in. Part of her sadness was that nobody has ever rejected being her friend in her entire life, but the other part was that she had developed a crush on Little Puma and wished for something more to happen between them.Â
As Charles and I rode home in silence. When we returned home I tried my best to make sure the girls and Caroline didn't realize anything, but when I fell asleep with my doll next to my bed, I couldn't help but let the tears fall. God was I so stupid. I should have listened to my aunt and never initiated anything. I vowed to never repeat the same mistake with nobody ever again. But for now, I couldn't help but feel heartbroken.Â
[A/N: I am so sorry I didn't make a chapter yesterday. I was busy all of yesterday and today but I hope you guys liked it!]
Chapter 4: Him
Chapter 4: Him
As the house was getting its finishing touches, Mary, Laura, and I went to collect some berries from a bush near the creek. It was a peaceful late morning, with the birds chirping and the peaceful ambience of flowing water. Per usual with the Ingalls, we sang as we picked berries.
♪" 'Twas down in the meadows "♪
♪" The violets were blowing "♪
♪" And the springtime grass was fresh and green "♪
"Do you think Mr. Edwards would've had time to deliver a letter before he left?" Mary asked.
"Who are you writing letters to?" Laura asked.
"No one," Mary said quickly.
I made a 'mhm' sound. Before Mary could argue further, the buzzing of mosquitoes was heard, and she slapped her wrist to kill one. The girls teased each other about being too sweet and salty for mosquitoes. Laura went a bit farther than supposed to to collect berries because, according to her, 'these bushes were loaded', and she said that if we collected them we'd have pie all winter.
"You should stop eating them, then" I teased, and Laura side-eyed me while Mary giggled. Suddenly, we heard some women speaking in Osage. Of course we couldn't understand them but we went to a spot to see them better. As we watched, Laura suddenly waved and called out to them.
"Hi! Hello! I'm Laura." she said. I waved at them too, but Mary told Laura to stop quite loudly that the women looked at us and then left. My cheeks reddened slightly in embarrassment.
"I wanted to meet them" argued Laura.
"Ma's going to be mad" countered Mary.
"I think that it's better if we go home now, if we want to meet them it should be with a smaller distance so we don't yell and scare them." I tell both of them.
Laura and Mary exchange some tense eye contact before Mary and I walk away. I look back at Laura who put her flower crown down. "Laura!" Mary yells. "Come on Laura! Don't stay behind." I call out for her.
When we come home, we find that the house was finally finished and that Caroline had decorated it. There was a special figurine in the center of the house, a porcelain shepherdess. It signified that they were finally at home. I found it very sweet. Caroline told me to decorate if I wanted. I hadn't brought any decorations with me from home, except for a porcelain doll that I always kept near my bed, so I did that now. It was a gift my parents gave me for my 7th birthday, it was the last thing they gave me before the accident and so I cherished it. Caroline asked me about it, and we bonded because the china shepherdess was also dear to her for a similar reason, it was the last thing her father gave her. It was a bittersweet moment, and I was glad that I had someone who could relate to me.
      -------------------------------------------------
Later, we rode to town to celebrate the post office opening. I had to mail my aunt to tell her I arrived safely and how things were going. As we were riding in the wagon, we saw two Osage men riding next to us. The second man was the same man I had been thinking about for a long time. They both wore a hard to describe face, but from what I could decipher from there eyes was carefullness and a bit of despise. Laura tried to wave to them but Caroline lowered her hand. It seemed she didn't really like them or maybe it was that she just didn't want problems with them. Either way, I looked back at them and to my luck, he also looked back. I blushed slightly at his intense gaze and quickly looked to the front of the wagon.
As we arrived to the town, there were many red and white banners to celebrate the post office opening. Eli James, the husband of Jemma James, gave us a post card while congratulating Charles. The post card had a drawing of Independence with the shops and the main building was the post office.
"Pa, did you draw this?" Laura asked.
"I just might've" Charles answered.
"You're full of surprises" Caroline commented. Charles agreed with a chuckle.
"This is incredible, you could design some building Mr. Ingalls" I said. Charles pondered this for a while before a lady approached him. He introduced us to her, she was Ms. Aubert. Laura was shocked that a lady could wear pants. Ms. Aubert answered that not many people consider her a lady.
"Women in Paris wear pants, some even wear them in the city" I said and Ms. Aubert smiled. She was from France so she would know. Just as we were having a good time, Mrs. James came and took Caroline and the girls away. God how I hated the woman, and it seemed that my suspicions of her being the type of women who was judgmental and thought of herself highly because of her husband's job was correct because she did not even greet Ms. Aubert.
"I'm going to mail a letter and meet you back home if that's alright, Mr. Ingalls," I told Charles.
"Go ahead, kiddo" He answered.
I walked to the post office; the line was long, but some sweet man switched his second place with me. I thanked him very much and so I was able to send my Aunt Josephine the long letter I wrote for her the night before rather quickly. I thought I was going to spend a lot of time in the post office, but now I had an hour or so for myself. I decided to go exploring
    ----------------------------------------------------
As I left the town, I went to go find a creek because I was thirsty. I walked away from the road that we came from. I got a bit lost, but then I found a creek and guess who I saw sitting near it? Him! I was the type of person who believed that if you meet a person more than once by accident, it's a sign. It was that red string that I read once in a book. I went closer to the creek and crouched down at a distance from him to drink water. I could feel his eyes on me. I debated whether or not to initiate communication. My aunt always taught me to never initiate a friendship or relationship with a man but I decided to not listen to her.
I looked to my side and locked eyes with him. I smiled. "Hello" I said quietly. However, the man only stared at me with a rather grumpy expression. "What's your name? Can you understand me?" I asked him.
"I can understand you" He answered sharply. I didn't mind his tone,
"My name is Clara" I said cheerfully, "What's yours?" I asked.
"Little Puma" he answered coldly.
A moment of silence passed by before I broke it. "Are you Osage?" I asked.
"What did you think I was? A settler?" He said frustrated.
"Well no, I just wanted to make sure.. What's it like to be Osage?" I asked to change the subject.
"Normal, but much better than being a settler" He said harshly.
Some time was spent with me asking him questions, I hoped he'd soften a bit, and he did. The sun was starting to set and I stood up. I offered him a hand to be polite and to my surprise he accepted it!
--"Do you know your way home?" He asked.
--"Not really"
--"Where do you live?"
--"In that small house in the prairie"
--"I'll take you home"
--"That's very kind of you, thank you"
He got on his horse however I stayed down. "Do you know how to ride a horse?" He asked me. "No" I answered without looking up to him. Before I knew it he got off the horse and put me on the horse. I let out a small shrieked sound at the suddeness of it all. He got on behind me while holding the reigns close to my waist.
The ride home was silent. At a good distance from the house I asked him to let me down there. He helped me down. "Thank you very much, I hope to see you around." I told him with a smile while he got on his horse, he only smiled back at me. I waved him goodbye and walked to the house. As I reached home it was already dark so I ate a small thing before going to bed.
[A/N:Â I tried to make this a bit longer and I'm sorry for the delay I had some things to do today but I'll try to finish this story soon because I doubt I'll be able to write when school starts since I'm taking AP World and I'm so scared lol]

Chapter 3: The Search
Chapter 3: The Search
Hours passed by, and Mr. Edwards did not appear. Charles went to Mr. Mitchell, an Osage man he befriended, to see what happened. Mr. Mitchell said that it's normal for Mr. Edwards to sometimes 'wolf out' or leave to sell his things. However, Caroline soon confessed to having told him to leave until he stopped drinking. After that, Charles rode out to Mr. Mitchell's house so he could accompany him in searching for Mr. Edwards.
While we were waiting for any news, Laura and Mary went to get water. But a long time passed and they didn't come back. Usually it would take only a few minutes but more than an hour passed. Both Caroline and I called out for them but it was no use. Fortunately, Mrs. James was riding by and started a search party. Charles also came back and joined. I joined as well and went further away to the creek and the forest.
I called out to them several times from the outskirts, but it was no use, so I decided to go deeper. I called out for them again but nothing, it was also getting dark and I didn't want to get lost myself. I debated whether or not to go deeper; on one hand I feared getting lost, but on the other I feared something happening to them. I decided to go deeper, that was when I saw a tall figure. I didn't know whether it was an animal or man because of the shadows.
"Hello?" I called out.
Silence. I decided to go closer to him, the man started walking away. I didn't want to be a creep, so I watched from my spot. The sun seemed to be in my side because it cast a ray of light in his face for a split second before he disappeared. He was handsome; I had never seen a man so gorgeous before. He seemed to be Osage and I wanted to follow him until I heard a calling to signal that the search was over.
I quickly made my way back to the prairie and I saw that Mr. Edwards had found the girls and brought them home! Sadly, Mr. Edwards didn't stay and left afterwards. As I tried to fall asleep, I couldn't stop thinking about the man I saw in the woods. I wanted to know more about him, but before I could continue thinking about him, I fell asleep.
The next morning, Mrs. James had been kind enough to find a different man to help Charles build the house. It seemed I had been wrong about her but I wasn't so sure. I conversed with Mary, she told me about Caleb, a boy who worked in a shop in town, who had sent her some ribbons. How wonderful is love! It was a very beautiful morning, Laura went to a nearby meadow with me to pick some flowers. We returned as we heard many hoofbeats of horses nearby our house. They were Osage hunters or warriors, it seemed. We all watched them from a good distance. That was when I saw a fierce-looking Osage man in third place. He was dressed in a bone-looking shirt with red and blue markings in his face and body. As they passed by, the man and I locked eyes, and right there, I realized that it was him, the same man I saw in the forest a couple of hours ago.Â
Chapter 2: The Prairie
I had been so exhausted from the journey that I slept through Laura almost being eaten by a wolf. Mr. Ingalls came back in the morning, and he had found the most beautiful piece of land ever! We all got to work gathering materials for the house, and I helped Mrs. Ingalls and Mary with the chores. There wasn't any talk about anything interesting until Laura came back after meeting an Osage girl and her father. Laura really wanted to go and visit them but Caroline disagreed. It must have been from her fear of the war with the Indians in the north. Charles agreed with Laura that we should befriend them and I agreed with him, it was much better to learn from them and befriend them than have them as enemies.
As Caroline and Charles were building the base of the house, Caroline hurt her foot. Charles immediately went to find a doctor to help her. When Dr. Tann comes and treats her injury, he finds out that Caroline was pregnant! It was so exciting that there was soon gonna be a baby here; however, that meant that Charles would have to find help for the house. I would want to help, of course but it wasn't the same as being able to. After a day or two, Mr. Ingalls finds Mr. Edwards to help with the building of the house. He was a kind man who I believed had a tragic past.
The same couldn't be said for Mrs. James. Sure, she seemed nice and came with gifts because she heard we were having a hard time, but I knew the type. From the many years I lived in the city, I knew a thing or two about personalities, and Mrs. James was the judgmental woman who thought of herself far too highly because her husband had an important job. My aunt Josephine would absolutely hate her. Many would think that because my aunt was wealthy, she would be like Mrs. James but that wasn't true. My aunt could hate some things but she was never judgmental of people who were different. Perhaps I was wrong about Jemma James, but only time would tell.Â
[A/N:Â I am so sorry for the short chapter, I will publish Chapter 3 today but I wanted to keep the scenes of the story the same as the series so later on will be the meet, don't fret!]
Chapter 1: The Journey
Not even a week passed since Clara arrived at the Wisconsin forest, that the journey to Kansas began. If she said that it wasn't tiring she would be lying. It was rather awkward travelling with the Ingalls as she did not know them very well, and it seemed to her that there were some problems with their leave. However, she tried her best to get to know them and be as polite as possible. The two daughters of Charles and Caroline Ingalls, especially Mary, were quickly fascinated by Clara as it was their first time seeing a city girl.
Clara enjoyed talking with the youngest daughter, Laura, as she reminded her about her younger years, without the hunting of rabbits of course. She also grew close to Mary, the oldest daughter of Charles and Caroline. Clara didn't really know the difficulties of being the oldest sibling or the youngest, as she was an only child, but she could imagine the responsibilities Mary had and so Clara tried to be her mentor.Â
The wagon stopped in a clearing as it became night. They all rested for a bit and Charles started playing his fiddle and the girls started singing with Caroline a folk song.Â
     Â
♪"O whistle and I'll come to you, my lad"♪
♪"O whistle and I'll come to you, my lad"♪
♪"Tho' father and mother and a' should gae mad"♪
♪"O whistle and I'll come to you, my lad"♪
When the sun rose, they began the journey back to Independence. Clara really enjoyed travelling with the Ingalls because they were very merry and a close-knitted family, not to mention they sang very beautifully. As they walked with the wagon, they stumbled upon a river and a piano.Â
"Why would someone leave it here?" asked Mary.
"Too heavy probably" answered Caroline.
"Clara, do you know how to play the piano?" asked Mary.
"I took a few classes, yes" answered Clara.
"How is it in the city? Do you have many dresses? Are there many rooms in your house?" asked Mary. Clara chuckled but Caroline scolded Mary for being so nosy.Â
"That would be a story for another time dear Mary" answered Clara with a smile.
All of them got on the wagon to ride across the river. Clara sat with Mary and Laura and their dog Jack in the back. Clara didn't talk because she was trying to put down this bad feeling she had in the pit of her stomach. Suddenly, the wagon moved and the horses neighed in a panicked way. It all happened so quickly but Clara focused on holding the girls close to her as they were scared and Laura was trying to see were Jack was. It was a miracle on how they survived but Charles trully had a connection with the horses because he was able to calm them down.Â
Caroline had cut herself while trying to hold the reigns. Thankfully a doctor, Dr. Tann, helped her, however Charles and Caroline conversed together and so Clara gave them some alone time. She went to see Laura, who was trying to find Jack.Â
"Don't worry Laura, Jack will come back, he's probably just exploring" Clara tried to reassure Laura.Â
"But how is he going to find us Clara?" asked Laura.
"Why he'll find you by following your scent" said Clara and Laura felt more at ease.Â
After that incident, they rode in the wagon to Independence. It was smaller than what Clara was expecting but that didn't change her excitement at all. It was all so different in the best way possible, she even caught a glimpse of an Osage man and his young daughter. The girls and Caroline went to a shop, unfortunately Clara's aunt hadn't sent money to her yet so she wasn't able to help Caroline with the groceries but she would make sure to make it up to her. Clara couldn't wait until she could explore these new lands but that'll be an adventure for another time as now they have to find that land where they'll stay.Â
[SIDENOTE] I won't stick exactly to the script, I will make some changes to it and I might switch up the writing between third and first person. I really hope you are all enjoying this so far and please tell me your thoughts in the comments!
Prologue
EÂ ver since Clara could walk, her parents described her as "free-spirited". She would always escape whatever she was doing to go and run in between the flowers in the meadow. As a child, Clara loved learning about nature, whether it was about the different types of flowers or the different critters that roamed the meadow. It was something she shared with her father and one part of her he would spoil endlessly, buying her books that would fuel her interest before she could even read properly. It was as if he knew what was to come.Â
At the young age of seven, tragedy struck. Both of Clara's parents died in a fatal accident and Clara was sent to live with her distant Aunt Josephine.Â
Aunt Josephine was an open-minded woman, however she was, as most aristocratic people were, strict on being proper. She was adamant on Clara growing up to be a proper lady, and Clara did. However, no amount of ettiquette classes could ever extinguish her free-spirit and curiosity. Whenever Clara had the chance, she would escape her aunt's lavish parties and would go to the library and read the books her father had bought her a long time ago, as well as the books Aunt Josephine would buy her. But reading was not sufficient for Clara, she yearned for an adventure of her own and her own discoveries.Â
Little did Clara know that her wishes would come true once she turned 18. Aunt Josephine had heard that an aunt of Clara from Wisconsin was going on an adventure to Kansas. So Clara bid goodbye to Aunt Josephine and her friends, and she embarked on a train to Wisconsin. She didn't know that she wouldn't be just embarking on a normal journey but on a journey that would change the course of her life forever...
DISCLAIMER: I forgot to add Aunt Josephine as a character but her character is Aunt Josephine from Anne with an E just like a small crossover and not exactly the same but she would be played by Deborah Grover.Â
