I don't like how amatonormative the OSC (& generally just fandom culture in general) is. Ppl leave almost no room for genuine nuanced, complex, loving, caring, relationships unless its between romantic partners (or if they don't wanna be in a romantic relationship, theyre "just siblings")
Using Inanimate Insanity as an example (bc its my favorite object show & I think it has some pretty good examples of this), ppl treat Lightbrush & Fantube as if the only way you could possibly interpret their relationship is through a romantic lens. As if they're both inherently just happily married couples with (in the case of Fantube) a child (also weird inherent nuclear family structure there). People take certain scenes & interactions such as Paintbrush growing a soft spot for Lightbulb, & Test Tube & Fan taking care of the egg together, & take that as proof that
"OOHHH LOOK AT THAT THEYRE CANON"
"" LIKE YALL YOU CANT TELL ME THEYRE NOT MARRIED ""
(I also kinda see this in the way a lot of Tacopad, Tacomic, & Payjay shippers treat the characters as well)
And like.. blegh. Why? It all just feels so icky to me. Why does every dynamic between characters have to be romantic? How come characters can't be close friends & instead MUST be dating after they reach a certain level of closeness in their relationship? Romantic relationships aren't everything in life. You're not going to be sad & alone forever just bc you don't have a girlfriend, boyfriend, or romantic partner. Why are romantic relationships put on this sort of pedestal that everyone must attain & strive for, & hey, if two characters in a show display their love towards one another, that MUST mean they like each other & want to get married!!
I want to see more queer platonic rep. I want to see more characters that aren't afraid to show affection towards one another but are still perfectly fine with not being in a romantic relationship. I want to see more diversity in the relationships we see in media. I want to see more unlabeled relationship rep, where the relationship between characters doesn't neatly fall into the binary system of platonic or romantic. I want to see more characters experiencing squishes, & meshes, & knowing & being adamant that NO, its not a crush that they're experiencing.
And this isn't to say that we should stop shipping characters. Or that we should start hating on ppl that ship characters. Or that my point of view & interpretation of these characters is law. By all means, do whatever the hell you want as long as it isn't mentally, physically, or emotionally hurting anyone. I just want to stop forcing every relationship in media to be romantic
AND I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN SAID TIME & TIME AGAIN WITHIN DIFFERENT FANDOMS, WITHIN THE AROMANTIC COMMUNITY, WITHIN THE ASEXUAL COMMUNITY, WITHIN THE POLYAMOUROUS COMMUNITY
BUT FOR THE LOVE OF THE S*N IT IS SOMETHING THAT IS STILL RELEVANT, & WITHIN MY EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE OSC I CAN SAY THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT ESPECIALLY NEEDS TO BE SAID, AMATONORMATIVITY HAS GOT YALL BY THE THROAT & ASS, YALL NEED TO WAKE UP & BROADEN YOUR VIEW OF RELATIONSHIPS

i mean, i get that, and i don’t treat the ship as like. i know this is a popular ship and people really enjoy it and i hate hate hate going against people but.
