Nature often functions as a metaphor in Richter's abstract pictures. Although Forest (4) may not offer a recognizable representation of a forest, the work approximates its subject's beauty. Similarly, the capricious process Richter uses to create such paintings parallels the changeable forces of the natural world. As the artist has explained, "I hope to achieve the same coherence and objectivity that a random slice of nature ... always possesses."
