The six best films of 2014 in no particular order:
Only Lovers Left Alive- Jim Jarmusch’s gorgeously lulling ode to Vampires, Tangier, Rock & Roll’s slow fade, Detroit and Love. The only palatable, and thus finest piece of vampire media since the film that forever separated Slash and Axl (Interview with a Vampire). The nocturnal are finally painfully chic once again, and as a side note Tilda Swinton’s hair in this film may be the coolest on the planet.
Guardians of the Galaxy- Is essentially a perfectly paced hyper-reimagining of “The Breakfast Club” set in space that is so inexplicably enjoyable it will leave even the snobbiest of us dancing for days. Silly? Perhaps. Rad? Absolutely. Benicio Del Toro? You know it… Now if we can just get someone to green-light a live action version of Cowboy Bebop directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, I’m pretty sure the global water crises would solve itself.
Inherent Vice- Paul Thomas Anderson gloriously piloting Thomas Pynchon’s brilliant early 70’s psychedelic dreamscape with the beyond perfectly casted Joaquin Phoenix as Doc… film simply doesn’t get much better than this. “Dealing with the Hippie is generally straightforward. His childlike nature will usually respond positively to drugs, sex, and/or rock and roll, although in which order these are to be deployed must depend on conditions specific to the moment.” Indeed.
Interstellar- Christopher Nolan + Space + Wooderson + a surprisingly stunning redhead… civilization would crumble before this could be bad. A cinematic education in the fact that robots will actually be really rather dope, and the laws of metaphysics allow for fortune to exclusively favor the bold. If the final spaceship was simply named “Melba Toast” I would have no doubt walked out weeping tears of joy.
Fury- The longer I spend outside America the more I admire what makes it such a valiant albeit unrefined force of progress. I persuaded a room full of Europeans to watch this with me after I hosted a heavily libated thanksgiving for them. By the end there was not a dry eye in the room. This film is a gritty reminder of just how powerful the unwavering optimism and fortitude of the American spirit is, especially when faced with what others would consider insane or impossible odds. Wardaddy and his crew are a symbol of something we should all embrace: Death (when done without bitching) and Victory can in fact be the same thing… in America we call it glory.
The Grand Budapest Hotel- A delightful example of Wes nearly perfecting his enchantingly intricate satirization of societies perpetually wealthy and overeducated that we have come to cherish and long for as we await his next casual masterpiece. Adrien Brody’s character and performance alone make this infinitely re-watchable, but Bill Murray and Willem Dafoe are in it too so there isn’t much else to say.

-Because a desk is actually a prison for those of us who always want to #dance -Because holding hands while you sprint across a busy street allows #laughter to drown out the horns -Because having only #champagne and caviar in your fridge actually means you haven't eaten in two days -Because giving a fuck about what other people think of you is the deadliest sin of all -Because the best concerts bring tears to your eyes and keep you up for days -Because dim sum, one way tickets, and ponchos still exist -Because I'd rather rock headphones while I stare longingly at the deceased's paintings than hear the living complain -Because Voltaire, Baudelaire, Bukowski, and Hunter had it right all along -Because I'm still happiest when bonfires, cartoons, face-paint, tree-houses, and makeshift spears are involved -Because there are only so many women you can sleep with before you start asking "Where is my Sloan Peterson?"

Some days I just wake up proud to be from a place built on #Hustle, Grit and#Mischief. The land of Rock and Roll, Snap-backs, Bill Clinton, and Hacky Sacks...Ripped jeans, Krispy Kremes, and requited #dreams. Here is a little ode to home, I call it Dirty Americana

What would Liggy do?
"That night at the hotel, in our room with the long empty hall outside and our shoes outside the door, a thick carpet on the floor of the room, outside the windows the rain falling and in the room light and pleasant and cheerful, then the light out and it exciting with smooth sheets and the bed comfortable, feeling that we had come home, feeling no longer alone, waking in the night to find the other one there, and not gone away; all other things were unreal. We slept when we were tired and if we woke the other one woke so no one was not alone. Often a man wishes to be alone and a girl wishes to be alone too and if they love each other they are jealous of that in each other, but I can truly say we never felt that. We could feel alone when we were together, alone against the others. It has only happened to me like that once. I have been alone while I Was with many girls and that is the way you can be most lonely. But we were never lonely and never afraid when we were together. I know that the night is not the same as the day: that all things are different, that the things of the night cannot be explained in the day, because they do not then exist, and the night can be a dreadful time for lonely people once their loneliness has started. But with Catherine there was almost no difference in the night except that it was an even better time. If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."
Ernest Hemingway
Forever is a long long time when you've lost your way
“A man must dream a long time in order to act with grandeur, and dreaming is nursed in darkness.”
Jean Genet
Jealousy must be the ugliest of all human emotion. I've always found it bizarre that my constant state of happiness upsets people, but then again I've never cared enough to find out why. Ignorance is actually bliss (especially when coupled with social media security protocols)
