In the ofrenda, the main objects are a symbol of the elements of life: water, wind, fire and earth. Water to quench the thirst of the spirit from its long journey. Fire, represented by the lighted candles. Wind, represented by papel picado (shredded paper). The earth is represented by food, usually pan de muerto. Other offerings include mole, fruit, chocolate, atole, toys, sugar skulls, and copal incense and a framed photo of the deceased to whom the altar is dedicated. Cempasúchil flower, the ’flower of the dead’, is used to guide the spirits and decorate the ofrenda.

Our memories, they have to be passed down by those who knew us in life – in the stories they tell about us.
