I been wanting to write for a while. I have always had stories in my head but never really been good at getting them out. Maybe it was always the overthinking "oh you never written in your life." "I should know this before that or that before this." It's time for me to get out of my head and start. So I started doing these little 300-500 words scenes to learn. So far it's been exciting and terrifying at the same time oh and frustrating cause I stop a lot "oh where does the comma go?" "I think that's a run on". Someone said stop worrying about that, just write. what do you mean stop worrying isn't it the whole point? (it's not) I dunno.
Anyway here is "the jacket" it's rough but it's a start and that's what matters I think.
Maya stood in the doorway holding a mug of tea neither of them wanted.
Kira searched around, clothes thrown in different directions.
“Where is it?”
“Where is what?” Maya replied.
“My leather jacket. I know it was in here. The last time I wore it was last month. When me and Nancy went to the movies to see Marty Supreme.” She continued to throw clothes around.
Maya tiptoed around the room as if the floor was hot. She plopped down on the nearest box. It collapsed under her weight. The mug shattered. Tea spread across the floor.
“Maya, what the fuck!?” Kira shouted.
“I was trying to sit down.” Maya groaned, rolling on to her side. Tea soaked into her shirt. Glass shards stuck to her sleeves.
Kira closed her eyes and clasped her hands together. She exhaled sharply through her nose.
“You could have sat on the fucking bed or chair. Like Jesus!”
She stormed over and yanked Maya off the floor “look at what you did.” Her voice cracked just slightly. She picked up her soaked belongings.
“Why are you even in here?” Kira continued to pick clothes off the floor.
Maya stood off to the side. Her face flushed. She could still feel the bite of her words.
“I have something to tell you,” she said, fidgeting with the loose threads on her pants.
“Yea what is that?” Kira said as she threw clothes into a basket.
“I…I lost your leather jacket,” Maya admitted.
Kira turned. Her eyes widened.“Lost my jacket? My jacket? The one I been looking for all day that you said you didn't see?” Her fists clenched hard enough to whiten her knuckles.
“Where’s my goddamn jacket, Maya?”
Maya stood there, hesitant. When she did speak, her voice was soft and small. “I lost it at Johnny La Roche’s birthday party two weeks ago.” She could feel the sting of Kira’s eyes on her, but she kept her gaze focused on the floor.
Kira let out a frustrated hum and walked towards her desk. She stood there in silence before a sharp laugh took over. Tap tap tap-her fingers hit the desk, like shes playing a drum solo.
“You knew how much I loved that jacket. Grandpa gave it to me before he died.” Kira turned, eyes flickering to Maya. “This is what I mean you don't respect me or my shit. You never ask me to use any of my stuff."
"I was" Maya started.
"Shut it!" Kira snapped.
"You don't get to talk. The time to talk was two weeks ago when you lost it. That's when you should have told me." She paced back and forth. "I'm so glad I'm moving out so I can get away from you."
Her words cut deep. A few tears slipped down Maya's cheeks, her fingers gripping the fabric of her shirt.
"I'm…sorr"
"I'm not trying to hear all that. GET OUT!" Kira motioned toward the door.
Maya's shoulders sank as she walked out, eyes flickering back to her sister. "I'll make it up to you," she muttered. The door slammed. Maya didn’t knock, didn’t speak, didn’t move. She just sat there in the hallway and cried. She'd lost the jacket. And now, maybe, her sister too.
