MINERAL MADNESS FINALS
In a very close match, hematite and zircon came on top. So, which should win it all?
(In case you are curious, both cats voted for zircon.)

Last Day of the Semi Finals! Up first we havr zircon, a mineral that won't be destroyed by volcanic eruptions or meteorite impacts.
It is up against corundum, a mineral that eas used in 2500 BCE by the Chinese to make axes.
(You guys have no idea how hard this one is. My wedding ring has both)

Today we have hematite, which barely beat out bismuth (like 2 points). Hematite is the reason Mars is called the Red Planet.

Hardness of 3.5-4
Monoclinic crystal system
Doesn't melting but decomposed at around 392°F (200°C)
And it is up against zircon:
Hardness of 6.5-7
Tetragonal crystal system (which is why is makes a good fake diamond, same crystal system)
Melting point of a whopping 4530°F (2500°C)

Round 3, Day 3: Blue Mineral Battle.
Gonna be honest, the first competitors. Not my favorite and I honestly can't believe it is still in considering the mineral group it is part of got voted out so quick. Bet that's probably because people aren't aware labradorite is, in fact, a feldspar. Anyway, some fun facts:
It has a hardness of 6-6.5
It is in the triclinic crystal system
It has a melting point of 2,282°F (1250°C)
It is up against kyanite, another one I am kind of surprised has made it this far. Fun facts:
It has a variable hardness between 4.5 and 7.5 depending on the crystal axis (long axis is softer)
It is also triclinic
It has a melting point of 3,272° F (1800°C)

Round 3 had begun! Up first we have bismuth! Some quick facts:
It has a Mohs Hardness of 2-2.5
It is part of the trigonal crystal system.
It has a melting point of 520.5°F (271.5°C)
It is up against hematite (which I honestly did not expect to make it this far). Quick facts:
It has a Mohs Hardness of 5.5-6.5

Last day of round two competitors! Up first we have corundum. Did you know that pure corundum is colorless? In fact, it might be in your hand right now as you read this as it is sometimes used to make scratch resistant glass for phones.
It is up against quartz, whose pure, clear form was once though to be water so deeply frozen it would never thaw. The ancient Greeks calles it krystallos which means ice.

Today we have two gemstones battling out. First, we have zircon, a mineral with trace amounts of uranium and thorium in it which allows us to get the afe of the earth.
It is up against tourmaline, which may have been used in more European crown jewels than previously thought. Apparently, they couldn't tell it apart from rubies. Oops.

It is up against Olivine, an mineral so heat resistant it has been found "raining down" from gas clouds around developing stars.
