Ah yes. The heat of Lemoyne or even worse- living in the swamps surrounded by mosquitos, alligators and the heavy breathing of the pinkertons down your neck.
You disliked Shady bell,maybe even hated it. The heat and humidity sometimes made you snap at the tiniest things that wouldn't bother anyone else.
Arthur mostly dismissed your little outbursts but the past few days and weeks have been hard on him,Jack was missing and he started to get even more suspicious on Micah while Dutch was lowkey babying this grown ass man.
Standing on the outskirt of the camp,the mosquitos hummed softly in your ear and the sweat made you feel sticky and disgusting, the rifle felt heavy in your hands.
You waited and waited for someone to take over the night shift since you've been standing there for two hours.
Soft crunches of sticks broke the silence and the annoying humming of mosquitos. Arthur approached.
"Hey there honey",Arthur tried to lighten the mood and his hands outstretched to take the rifle from you.
"Oh don't ya even start. I've had enough with ya'll.", you retorted.
A sudden pang of frustation went through your boyfriend. "Yer just too spoiled, fuckin' city girl. Maybe daddy should've married ya off to have a more comfortable life,so ya wouldn't have to whin' that much."
"I ain't no fuckin' city girl you idiot!"It hurt you that he had just snapped at you like that. But god,the heat seriously made you go crazy.
You were used to live in regions where the trees would cool everything down and the air wasn't humid.
A few days passed and Arthur felt bad. He felt sorry,yes. But how should he apoligize? Say 'I'm sorry,sweetheart'? Nah,that wasn't something he did.
You haven't even come to sleep in his arms anymore which made him concerned.On the other side,it has been just a little insult,nothing bad. Though he knew you was scared of being married off(which couldn't happen anymore).
He sat on a log and starred miserably into the fire.
Mary sat only a few meters away and noticed his expression. "What's wrong?", she asked him and closed her book.
"Nothin'...Just made [reader] a little mad and now she won't talk to me..."
Mary looked up with her blue eyes."Haven't you apoligized to her yet?"
A blush bloomed across Arthur's cheeks."C'mon,y'know i don't do that..."
"Ugh,then don't be surprised that she doesn't talk to you."
"Jesus christ,fine. I'm gonna talk to her.",Arthur said with a huff and got up.He saw you sitting near a swamp, likely feeling all hot and sweaty again. He had a plan how to make you a little happier again.
He was a little reluctant at first but he also didn't want to keep the silence because of a little...'Fight'. The heat picked at your skin and you already gave up on being pissy because you knew it wouldn't change. Suddenly you felt a big,familiar hand on your shoulder.
"Hey...I wanted to ride to Saint Denis..",Arthur tried to say as softly as possible.
"Look...",he sat down uncomfortably and shifted,"Y'know i didn't meant to say what i've said,right?"
You nodded and all of a sudden,you found your hands pretty interesting."I know..."
"And i wanted t'take a bath in saint denise...yer gonna join?",your man knew exactly how to get you back. You were hot and sweating constantly so bathing sounded like heaven.
"Oh damn ya!", you answered with a laugh and that broke the uncomfortable tension between you two.
Arthur stood up and stretched his hand out to you,guiding you towards his horse and helping you up.
"Maybe after that we can go to a nice little spot i saw earlier..."
Mary watched from afar with a smile on her face as both of you rode away.
