[ Danny listens just as seriously while his son explains the situation, and nods gravely once he’s finished. Dogs and girls are serious business. ] Outgunned, outplanned? 

Well if she did tricks, I’d have her do all the dog things. Sit, fetch, show off her handcuffs, play dead. That kind of stuff. 

I think you gotta ask her, first, pal. Consent is important.

So you can’t have a sister and a girl dog? Who said that’s a bad thing? 

It’s show and tell, Dad. Not show and ask. 

Hah, let’s hope not.

 You do know the dog could be a girl, right? 

Then I could bring her in for show and tell. 

Ouch, don’t let her hear you say that. You really think a dog is a fair trade for your Auntie Pez?

Ah, no can do, little man. Your mom and I talked about it buuut if we got a dog, we’d have to give one of you up to make room. And we’re kind of attached.

Mikey Woo climbs, until he is sitting directly on his father’s lap. One of these days, he’s going to be too big to do this - but for the moment he is five years old and he sits facing his father, his face very serious, very intent, and his little fingers poking at his father’s chest. 

"One day there was a boy. Named." He bites his lip. "Matt. The boy’s not me." He wrinkles his nose, looks very serious. No, the boy is definitely not him, not at all. "And he was the bestest boy ever, ‘cause his Daddy said so. He was five." 

This is a very serious matter, Dad. Make sure you are listening very intently. 

"And I - Matt - he was STARVING. He was really hungry Daddy. And he wanted McDonalds." 

He leans in to whisper. 

He sneaks up, one, two, three, and then - 

Pounces. And attempts to climb his back. Might be a little bit too excited that Dad's home. ]
