Line of Duty (2012-2021)
Created by Jed Mercurio, Line of Duty is BBC One's acclaimed anti-corruption thriller following AC-12, a police unit that investigates bent coppers within their own force. Season 6 introduces DCI Jo Davidson (Kelly Macdonald), placed under AC-12's microscope for her ties to an unsolved murder case and connections to the organised crime network the unit has been dismantling for years. Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), AC-12's most experienced undercover officer, is sent to work alongside Jo, watching her, building a case, and navigating the increasingly complicated space between professional duty and something harder to name. Martin Compston reprises his role as DS Steve Arnott, whose relentless pursuit of the truth drives AC-12 toward a finale watched by 12.8 million viewers - the UK's biggest TV drama audience in over a decade. Jo Davidson's story is one of institutional corruption, inherited complicity, and the question of whether a system rotten at its core can offer anyone a clean way out.

Vita and Virginia (2018)
Directed by Chanya Button from Eileen Atkins' screenplay, Vita and Virginia is based on the real letters and diaries of Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf, who began their celebrated affair in 1920s London at the heart of the Bloomsbury literary circle. Gemma Arterton plays Vita, aristocrat, writer, gardener, and force of nature who collected the devotion of everyone around her, and Elizabeth Debicki plays Virginia Woolf, already a significant literary figure and privately struggling with the fragility that would define her life as much as her genius. Their relationship was electric, documented in hundreds of letters, and produced one of literature's most enduring love letters: Virginia's Orlando (1928), a shape-shifting novel written explicitly for Vita and dedicated to her. Isabella Rossellini plays Lady Sackville, Vita's formidable mother. Both women were married, both moved through a world that had no approved language for what they were to each other, and chose it anyway.

The World to Come (2020)
Directed by Mona Fastvold and based on Jim Shepard's short story, The World to Come stars Vanessa Kirby as Abigail, a farmer's wife in 1850s rural New York still grieving the loss of her child, and Katherine Waterston as Tallie, her new restless, vivid and impossible to ignore neighbour. Their friendship deepens across seasons into something neither has a name for, in a time and place that offers women almost no room to live. The film unfolds through Abigail's diary entries, quiet and precise as the landscape around them. The World to Come premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize. It sits alongside Carol and Portrait of a Lady on Fire as one of cinema's most beautifully restrained sapphic love stories.

House of the Dragon (2022-present)
Created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, House of the Dragon is HBO's prequel to Game of Thrones, set two hundred years before the events of Westeros' most famous war. Emma D'Arcy (they/them) stars as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king's chosen heir who rides the dragon Syrax and refuses to accept that her birthright should be taken from her, and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Rhaenyra's childhood confidante who married the king and became her greatest rival. Matt Smith plays Daemon Targaryen, Rhaenyra's dangerous, devoted uncle. At the centre of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons is the relationship between these two women forged in girlhood intimacy, fractured by politics and loyalty, and never entirely cold.

Gentleman Jack (2019-2022)
Anne Lister (1791-1840) was a real Yorkshire landowner, diarist, and businesswoman who documented her life, including her relationships with women, in a coded script she developed herself. Her diaries, now a UNESCO World Heritage document, are one of the most significant records of lesbian life in history.
Created by Sally Wainwright and based on those diaries, Gentleman Jack is a BBC and HBO co-production starring Suranne Jones as Anne alongside Sophie Rundle as Ann Walker, the quiet, complicated woman Anne sets her sights on. With Lydia Leonard, Gemma Whelan, and Sophie Winkleman, the series captures Anne's relentless ambition, her charm, and her refusal to apologise for the life she chose at a time when that cost her everything and she paid it anyway.

True Detective: Night Country (2024)
Written and directed by Issa López, True Detective: Night Country is the fourth installment of HBO's acclaimed anthology crime series. Jodie Foster stars as Liz Danvers, the Chief of Police in the small Arctic town of Ennis, Alaska, and Kali Reis as Evangeline Navarro, a State Trooper with deep ties to the Indigenous community and a fraught history with Danvers. When a group of scientists from a polar research station vanish without trace in the dead of the Arctic winter, the two women are forced back together, circling each other, circling the dark. Issa López became the first Latina to write and direct an entire season of True Detective, grounding the show in Iñupiaq culture and the particular silence of a place where the sun doesn't rise for weeks. Night Country is a meditation on memory, Indigenous erasure, and what it costs women to do the work that never gets done for them.

Yellowjackets (2021-present)
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets is Showtime's acclaimed survival drama following a girls' soccer team whose plane crashes in the remote Canadian wilderness in 1996, and the fractured, haunted women they become twenty-five years later. Melanie Lynskey leads the adult ensemble alongside Tawny Cypress as Taissa Turner, a state senator whose darker self emerges in crisis, and Lauren Ambrose as Van Palmer, the woman who survived when she shouldn't have and never quite left Taissa behind. With Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, and Sophie Nélisse, the series weaves cult ritual, black comedy, and raw female survival into one of prestige television's most distinctive voices.

Lady Bird (2017)
Written and directed by Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women), Lady Bird is an A24 coming-of-age film starring Saoirse Ronan as Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson, a headstrong Sacramento teenager who named herself and is determined to escape her working-class Catholic upbringing for the East Coast colleges she's convinced will transform her. Laurie Metcalf plays her mother Marion and their relationship sits at the heart of the film: two women who want the same things for each other and can't stop hurting each other trying to give them. With Beanie Feldstein, Lucas Hedges, and Timothée Chalamet, the film earned Greta Gerwig historic Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Picture, making her only the fifth woman ever nominated for Best Director at the time. Lady Bird is a love letter to ordinariness, to mothers, and to the complicated grace of becoming yourself.

The Fall (2013–2016)
Created by Allan Cubitt, The Fall is a BBC psychological crime thriller set in Belfast. Gillian Anderson stars as DSI Stella Gibson, a senior detective sent from London to review a stalled murder investigation and who rapidly identifies a serial killer: Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan. What follows is an unflinching, slow-burn cat-and-mouse between two brilliant, controlled people. Anderson's Stella is one of television's great female characters: unapologetically herself and completely indifferent to whether anyone approves. The show ran for three seasons and earned Gillian Anderson a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress.
