chapter 29 + 36 vs. chapter 116 + 127

these panels are rlly sick bc you can see how naive fushi was, stubbornly clinging onto his past relations. death was still a relatively new concept for him, especially as he saw how his friends would die and he couldn’t; as if to make matters worse, he’s able to take on their forms once they’ve died. after renryrr five hundred years ago, fushi has been more closed off, but he’s still stubborn about his relations. what’s changed is that he’s no longer open about them as he had been when gugu, rynn, and beer gramps were alive. he is more cynical; but that’s not surprising, bc he was friends w someone like kahak, who had questionable morals and came from an even more dubious background. but as i covered in another post, fushi saying “and i think that’s for the best” about kahak’s death and march’s responding “i thought we could be friends” are more complicated matters than either of them will or can admit. 

when it comes to gugu, it’s easy because gugu has only came to fushi w pure intentions and they knew exactly where they stood with each other. they lived and grew up with each other; trust is easy to build up in this situation, especially when they both knew they were different from other people. in chapter 36, black hood says that gugu chose to hasten his death to save fushi, “in a way, suicide.” kahak did the same thing; this is part of what fushi struggles with, because kahak had killed fushi’s friends multiple times and was technically involved in fushi’s murder as well. does this final act of love overwrite the bad, though? fushi wants it to. bestbonnist mentioned this before, but fushi “glosses over the murdery aspects of kahak’s personality.” while it still hurts him, fushi has become familiar enough with death to look the other way for kahak at this point. fushi wants everything defined clearly, but that’s impossible to do with people.
