Challenges of sustainable urbanisation
REFRAMING URBAN RESILIENCE IMPLEMENTATION
The five elements of urban resilience systems
How can Corfu town deal with a possible severe natural occurance and its impact on the local population?
We have entered a new urban era in which the ecology of the planet is increasingly influenced by human activity. Due to increasing urbanisation, cities have become the center of attention, as they generate a rising demand for natural resources and have a global environmental impact. Urbanisation puts increasing pressure on nature, and weakens its resilience to a changing climate and events such as natural disasters, with devastating consequences for cities and their inhabitants. With the recent memories of heavy weather patterns, floods in southern european countries, urban heat waves and air pollution, in addition to increasing costs of energy, food and water supply, cities and urbanized regions are aware of the urgent need for action. Many cities have seen an increase in community initiatives for restoring nature and have supported sustainable activities. There is now an opportunity to strongly improve global sustainable development over the next two to three decades by increasing resource efficiency, and exploring how cities and citizens can reconnect to the biosphere and become responsible stewards of biodiversity and ecosystem services, both within and beyond city boundaries

Moving from Risk to Resilience: Sustainable Urban Development in the mediterranean cities -and old towns-
Urban resilience is the ability to withstand and recover from unexpected shocks associated with natural hazards and climate change. Building resilience to these risks can be dealt with most effectively through strengthened urban planning and management. Considering and responding to these risks is an essential part of proactive urban management strategies and infrastructure development plans. Possible approaches for building urban resilience include the following:
collect natural hazard and climate change information;
provide basic urban services to all residents;
adopt risk-resilient land use planning and zoning;
improve infrastructure design standards to take into consideration natural hazard and climate change risks;
preserve natural ecosystem functions such as natural drainage channels, green space, and natural shoreline buffers; and
implement effective early warning systems, emergency disaster response, and post-disaster recovery.
The achievement of risk-resilient urban development using the measures requires enabling measures such as improved urban governance arrangements and adequate human and financial resources including the following:
Participatory bottom-up urban development strategies;
Adoption of a systems approach for urban planning and management;
Improved urban institutional coordination arrangements; and
Strengthened human and financial resources.
Promoting sustainable urban development will not only improve the quality of urban living in the region's growing cities and towns, but will also build resilience to natural hazards and climate change
Greece's tectonic plates layout diagramme.. Notice how close the rim is situated in respect to Corfu capital seat (Kerkyra town)..
All buildings have a natural, period, or resonance, which is the number of seconds it takes for the building to naturally vibrate back and forth. The ground also has a specific resonant frequency. Hard bedrock has higher frequencies softer sediments. If the period of ground motion matches the natural resonance of a building, it will undergo the largest oscillations possible and suffer the greatest damage.
Find the solution, before the problem appears..
Design patterns for seismic-resistance in high rise buildings and multi storey apartments.. But, what can be applied to the old foundations of Corfu town's old structures, to prevent collapse and hazardous consequences?
