This is an excerpt of a very interesting Q&A published in the Orochi Saga’s Final Chapter artbook, answered by, I can only assume, one of SNK’s devs? The book was published by NeoGeo Freak/Geibunsha, so it is as close to “official” as we can get.

Some of the topics covered include: confirmation that Iori killed his girlfriend, the change of color of Iori’s flames in the KOF’97 ending, the link between the three clans and Japan’s Emperor, what causes the Riot of the Blood, if Iori or Leona's children (figuratively) would suffer the Riot, among other things.
