Learning there is no future tense in Sicilian language was a moment when some things clicked for me. My roommate and I were having a conversation earlier about how much pleasure we experience living a slow pace and one thing she said was “I love wiping down the table— I love doing the laundry, sweeping the floor… What else is there to do?” Culturally there is no rush to get beyond the moment. There is presence and meaning in essential functions. This morning at the little pasticceria I’ve been visiting I asked for my espresso to take with me and the old man who owns the shop essentially said in Italian “for what” and gave me a cup and a spoon to drink in the shop with a smile.
