Climatic Oasis #464
Fabian Franciszkiewicz
“2041- Climate change has transformed New York City into a desert. Vegetation is withering and the air is increasingly becoming worse. The population either lives in artificially cooled housing units, only usable due to massive air conditioning systems and the separation to the surrounding environment, or flee to cooler regions. New york ́s vibrant life slowly stagnates. The former metropolis threatens to become a solitary place, extinct due to manmade climate catastrophe.
Amidst this city where life was flourishing, a climatic oasis arises as antithesis to climate refugees and people striving against the alteration. Oasis #464 is an adaption to the more and more hostile surrounding. A paradise in a futureless environment where natural symbiosis between nature and inhabitants can work again. By creating a microclimate, a sort of climate capsule interacting with its surrounding, plants regain a chance to live. Thereby housing is harmonised with nature using natural effects in order to generate a climatic comfortable atmosphere.”
Chiharu Shiota has woven nearly 300,000 yards of white yarn to make 150 boats sail across the space at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche. Her exhibition “Where are we going?” expresses a sense of unease over what is to come in our individual and collective lives: http://bit.ly/2kJbpGo
