Broadway around 18th St in Oakland, Ca
Francisco Diaz aka PASTEL from Buenos Aires has a solo show that opened last week at Athen B Gallery on Webster St in Oakland, Ca. Prior to the opening he painted this mural off Broadway around 18th St.
Earlier this year he painted an immense mural highly visible from the 880 freeway in San Leandro.
“I try to base my work on experiences. Considering the space where I get to create my work, it may be a city, a rural space, an open space or a closed space. First of all by trying to understand the conditions that the environment offers and not to impose an already established concept for the space. Working with flora as social symbolism, the pieces begin a dialogue about the nature of man and his surroundings. The existential, real, pure and tragic, almost forgotten in modern society.”

French artist Tof Vanmarque crafts surreal worlds in his acrylic paintings. These fictional characters exist in a world devoid of physics, muted clothing, and in many cases, body parts. The artist’s work tends to exist against scenic, yet rundown backdrops, possibly victim to the insane characters that inhabit them. More on HiFructose.com.
Thanks to 21st Century Fox and AMC Theatres, those residing in 14 U.S. cities will have the opportunity on Feb. 18 to watch the three-time Oscar-nominated movie about the African American women who were behind NASA’s space program during its early years.

Matt Brackett’s “Dark Animals.”
After being diagnosed with Cancer in 2011, artist Matt Brackett began to create paintings that would form the series now known as “Dark Animals.” Though just one part of his oeuvre, I think these works (I’ve included different series below) describe a certain energy or emotion not so easy to define except through a visual telling, an emotion that holds some type of unknown chaotic energy.
Matt says of his artwork, “it would be a gift if the wonder and menace in the paintings urge others to find their own meaning too, and we may find the darkness was like the passage of a cloud’s shadow, leaving us once again in sunlight.”
Continue below to see more of Matt’s paintings:
