another moment i think people massively overlook re: johnny is him telling his mom to leave him alone when hes in the hospital. the whole rest of the story he's been holding out hope that his parents are gonna come around and love him the way he wants. dally especially is frustrated by this because he knows its ridiculous, knows the gang are the ones who really care about him and tries do hard to get johnny to see that. and that ^ moment in the hospital is johnny finally getting it and accepting it.

like as much as johnny's arc is about staying gold and the value of staying kind, its also about... getting tough when you need to and accepting the reality of the world as it is, not how you want it to be. like as much as staying gold is something ponyboy (and johnny, to an extent) needs, getting tough (in this one particular way) is something johnny needs, and its dally who helps him get there.
