As we here at BDIPC adjust to having a bit of skin back in the game, we can’t say that the Giro isn’t blowing our collective skirt up—after all, it’s so inspiring to put eyes on some of the new talent, and the start list is a veritable cornucopia of familiar Dudes. HQ feels like home again, and it’s been nice to while away these long, lazy spring mornings with Hansen, Bak, Dumoulin, and the rest of the group. And, of course, we especially enjoyed the all-too-brief reign of the ever-Bangable Marcel Kittel. Since so many transfers happened while we were away, we were momentarily confused and disappointed to see he wasn’t wearing his delightful (and potentially transparent) Argos-Shimano costume. But there was something about the Etixx—Quick-Step kit that reminded us of something. We just couldn’t think of what it was.
Then, like magic, a photo of Bobke popped up on our Twitter feed. Now, we know what you’re thinking, but stick with us. We will not be subjecting you to slick innuendo about Bob Roll’s head. (But if Bobke happens to turn your crank, no judgies.) No, our interest was piqued when we noticed that the Dude who posted the shot was stateside for the Tour of California. He’s a Dude who puts the “D” in DS; the kind of man who makes the suits at Etixx think about adding an extra “X” to their name…you get the idea, yes? Today, we politely objectify Brian Holm, the ever-dapper directeur sportif of Etixx—Quick-Step.
As an ex-pro, Holm’s got experience coming at it from all angles. His top-ten performances at Paris-Roubaix, E3 Prijs-Harelbeke, and Dwars door Vlaanderen reveal a solid mastery of essential skills. The physical demands of Classics parcours also require an innate drive to go deeper, work harder, and last longer than the rest of the pack. Holm was also the winner of the ITT at Denmark’s 1990 National Championships, so it’s safe for us to assume he’s got soloing well in hand; no man can win without putting in the hard work necessary to refine his sense of rhythm, timing, and pace. On the whole, his rosy palmares show us that he’s a Dude who knows how to successfully reach a truly glorious finish.
Since assuming the position of DS at EQS, Holm has become dominant on a whole new level. There’s a vast difference between simply throwing a leg over and taking the time to craft a high-quality experience, particularly when one must consider the unique strengths and talents of multiple participants. This is where Holm’s alpha nature comes out to play—and win. Well-known for his talents in aural stimulation, Holm’s down-for-whatever attitude, intense eye contact, and decisive manner render it superfluous for us to spell out the endless possibilities opened up by a Dude with a superior knowledge of team tictacs. Though EQS rolls deep, it takes a man with a deft hand and a well-laid plan to pull it all off. As of this writing, his riders are currently leading the GC at both the Giro and the Tour of California, which means Brian Holm is exactly where we like him best: on top.
Do U even Marx, bro?: The disc brake debate as labor issue
`
When Fran Ventoso posted an open letter with photos of his bloody (alleged) disc brake wound, he was chumming the water for sharks. A frenzy of bike dudes—eager to drop knowledge, to pwn—nipped and snapped at each other online, debating whether disc brakes belong in the pro peloton or not. Cycling media published their own op-eds and continued to follow the story. I personally wasn’t invested much in this topic, but happened to click on CyclingTips’ article titled “Leaked notes reveal that UCI will restart disc brake trial in June.” The phrase “leaked notes” is sexy: it usually means someone snitched on something naughty. The headline plucks the most important fact from the article: disc brake trial restarts in June. Right?

Oh Kevin Pauwels, start to finish win, Plus some neat tricks along the way! And his dismounts are always so smooth.
Keep that form rolling in Gavere next week.
Rough day for our favorite guy, he got held up twice in the first lap and had to battle back from 20th position after one full lap. Was in 3rd position for a few laps, but was clearly feeling the effort and finished the day out in 8th position.
Just another typical CX dad…

Dr Ozone Rant
Finding myself incensed by cycling doping scandals is nothing new. As cycling fans we have lived through shitstorms from Armstrong, Rasmussen etc and more recently the Iglinsky brothers disappointed the hell out of me. This, though, is something different - for me anyway. Here, the scandal is not with the riders named, but with the process that has named them.
Dr Ozone is otherwise known as Dr Chris Mertens and is a Belgian sports doctor. He has been under invesstigation for a couple of years now for supposed dodgy practices involving removing blood from a patient, infusing it with ozone and then returning it from whence it came (efficacy very much in doubt). This procedure uses needles & is consiidered blood manipulation and is therefore outlawed.
I do not have a problem with this.
What I do have a problem with is that, of the apparent 19 named sportspersons being “investigated” the only ones whose names have been made public have been 3 cyclocross riders who have had to be told that they have been excluded from participating in the main competition they have been working towards all year.
So far, someone has the names Bart Wellens, Tom Meeusen & Laurens Sweeck listed as having been treated by Dr Mertens. Because Dr Mertens is being investigated these riders cannot be selected to represent their country & cannot go to the World Cup or World Champs.
No charges have been laid against them.
No investigation has been made into the riders themselves.
There is no A or B sample in this case. In fact no evidence seems to be fothcoming at all. It seems the UCI regulations allow for Salem witch-hunt style finger pointing and the careers of these 3 riders are forever clouded & viewed with suspicion.
The ‘no smoke without fire’ brigade have already branded them cheats.
Questions Who has named these riders?
Is the source of these accusations in any way credible?
What evidence has been submitted as proof of these allegations?
When was this supposed to have occurred?
I dont know the UCI rules and regulations and dont know where to look for the answers to whether these riders should be prevented from competing just because someone, somewhere named them in relation to something else.
THIS IS JUST BOLLOCKS.
How can they answer the accusations if they dont know what they are?
In the case of Tom Meeusen, he has been prevented from competing in the world champs once before, 2 years ago. There was no case to answer then, but the exact same thing comes back now?
Laurens Sweeck has just turned 21. When was he supposed to have received this treatment? Dr Mertens was their family doctor for years. He will have treated elder brother, Hendrik and twin brother Diether also, but neither of those have been named.
It would appear that UCI regulations, which were written to catch cheats, also allow for the punishment of riders due to suspicion and unfounded accusations.
I keep thinking I must be missing smething because I am linguistically challenged with all the reports being in Dutch, but my translator has been working hard and I stilll find no report of what it is these riders are supposed to have done or why they are being punished.
It is not just the language of the reports either, but the imagery. The showing of needles and bloodbags smacks of guilt when there haven’t even been any charges yet.
This whole situation leaves the riders, their families & friends, their teams & their fans incredulous at the injustice. I can only hope that the Belgian arbitrations service can sort this out as quickly as possible and allow the selectors free reign to include these riders again in the list for selection and that UCI take this situation on board and not allow it to continue.
As a fan, I have been looking forward to Hoogerheide and now find this has affected my enjoyment, so much that I may not go. My room in Tabor has been booked for a while now too, but I may not use it, not because I believe in the guilt of these riders, but because I believe in their innocence.
Now that all this is PROVED to be the complete bollocks it always was, I shall repost this.

Blood Moon
This is actually the blood moon two Aprils ago, but the moon doesnt change much and it still gives you a good idea of how spectacular it was.
……These portraits were taken one day before the start of the Tour de France, the second one was taken right after finishing the much feared cobble stone stage in Cambrai. So no staging for the second shot which shows the impact of it all.
