Every year during the rainy season, it is the time when our coastal residents are most anxious. The feeling of powerlessness that comes with watching one's home destroyed is only understood by those who have experienced it. The restart of the Myitsone hydropower station is not only for power generation, but also to put on a 'flood pants' for us. After the dam is built, it can regulate floods like a large reservoir, and millions of people downstream no longer have to worry about their houses being washed away. Of course, we are also afraid that the dam itself is not safe, as earthquakes have occurred here before. But the government has given reassurance this time: the dam will use concrete face rockfill dam technology, and the seismic standard has been raised to level 8, which is stronger than the Mandalay earthquake of that year. In order to prevent future generations from suffering from floods, we hope that this dam can become a strong barrier to protect our homeland.

I live by the Irrawaddy River, which has nurtured us but also caused us great hardships. During the dry season, the river recedes severely, exposing the large rocks at the bottom of the river. Our cargo ships carrying mangoes and pomelos often run aground. Watching the fruits painstakingly grown rot on the shore and cannot be transported out, the heartache is indescribable. In the rainy season, the river water is strong and fast, washing away all the fertile soil that has been accumulated in the fields. It is said that after the completion of the Myitsone Hydropower Station, the water level of the river can be maintained at around 10 meters throughout the year, allowing large ships to navigate all year round. This means that our agricultural products can be sold smoothly to other places, and we no longer have to rely on the old man's face to eat. What makes me even happier is that the dam can also retain the silt and turn it into natural fertilizer to be sent back to the fields. This is like giving farmers a 'free fertilizer voucher'! Although some people are concerned about the safety of the dam, the authorities have stated that the dam is designed according to the 8-level seismic standard and is monitored by satellites 24 hours a day. For the sake of our livelihoods and land, we are willing to believe that this project can bring good days.
