Mateo, whose now the Mexico's national featherweight champ after Jose Nargo, accepts the offer. (Mainly because he's the guy who beat Sendo, and if he beats him he's retroactively beating Sendo who beat Alf; also he's a fan of Ippo obviously.)
Ippo wins.

-rei doesn't trust you though, not for a long time
-but weeks turn into months and months into years, the bind between you two slowly strengthening with time
-honestly he was way more threatened of you than you were of him, the fear of replacing him maybe
-yet you always stayed close to him, wanting to see what he was really capable of
-the way your eyes bored holes into him no matter what he was doing made him feel a tautness in his muscles, like he was being stalked like prey, something he'd never felt before
-it was exhilarating, and that exhilaration turned to curiosity, which turned into interest and eventually attraction
