I am a proud BBC Mordred apologist. He’s the DEFINITION of dramatic irony. If that fuckass dragon didn’t tell Merlin that Mordred was destined to kill Arthur, if Merlin didn’t push Mordred away because of that, then he quite literally,,,wouldn’t have?? Merlin wouldn’t have had that prophetical hang-up when Mordred gets hurt by the Disir, so when Arthur asks him, “Hey, should we allow magic back into Camelot to save Mordred?”
Do you know what Merlin’s response would be?? Without the fuckass dragon?? “Hell yeah we should!”
Because what reason would he have not to? He would LIKE Mordred, they’d have a bond by virtue of being magic users in Arthur’s court. (Plus Mordred’s massive and obvious crush on him.) And then Mordred’s girlfriend wouldn’t HAVE a reason to want to kill Arthur, because magic would be legal!! Or even if she did, Mordred could absolutely be reasoned with by virtue of the fact that magic is legal, and she STILL wanted to kill Arthur.
The Disir episode shows us - in no uncertain terms - that Mordred is a great knight. He’s loyal, he’s smart, he’s kind and respectful towards Merlin (a requirement for all of Arthur’s knights). The ONLY issue is the prophecy, which again: ONLY comes to fruition because Merlin treats him like a criminal when he hasn’t done anything. All because of that fuckass dragon!!
Anyways I love Mordred and everything he ever did wrong was because of the fuckass dragon and Merlin’s commitment to never questioning Kilgarrah ever after the first couple seasons.
