Funeral Song

Dolly had been sitting in the corner, surrounded by coloring books and crayons, when she heard the familiar sound of the infirmary door. Looking up, she had hoped it was her father, but was pleasantly surprised with a different familiar face. “ Hiya ‘Ta! ‘M coloring! Wanna join me? I dunno know where papa is right now but he said he’d be back soon! ” Scooting over, the chick patted the spot next to her, violet eyes sparkling and hopeful; she had gotten to know Ryouta due to all the time he spent in the infirmary with her, and she considered the dove a friend.

“Ohh alright~ Sounds fun! I’m all for some coloring!” If Mr. Iwamine wasn’t here, might as well pass some time with Dolly instead of just sleep the time away right? That and, Dolly was very fun to be around and play with. Ryouta was quite happy whenever he’d peek in and see the little girl. He takes a seat at the spot Dolly had patted and stares at the crayon box. He then picks up the first color he could see as he looks over at Dolly working on a drawing.

“Why? She’s your friend, right? You should be honest with her, Mr. Kawara.” Nageki could sympathize with Ryouta in a lot of ways - their failing health, lack of one or more parents - but Nageki never had to work hard, even when he’d wanted to. He’d been doted on and pampered most of his life due to Hitori’s worrying nature and he felt bad for Ryouta, who had to struggle to survive by himself with nobody to help while also combating his own weak body. He deserved to be taken care of most of all. 

Nageki couldn’t help but wonder if this was how Hitori felt about Nageki’s health and suddenly felt a rush of camaraderie for his elder brother.

Listening to Ryouta with a small frown, Nageki sent him another worried glance. The shorter boy’s face had gone somewhat red, which Nageki found curious - was he too hot? The furnace wasn’t all that warm… Maybe he was still cold, then, and the chill was making his cheeks pink. Was there anything he could do to help? Hitori had given him a spare scarf this morning, just in case…

“Here. If you’re cold.” He rooted around in his coat pocket, offering the first scarf he grabbed to Ryouta - his own one. “I taught myself to knit when I got bored one time, so I made this myself. It’s not very good looking, but it keeps me warm in the winter, so I hope it helps you too.”

“Yeah, she is. You’re right! I guess I worry that telling her everything would make her worry too much or something. I don’t... want anything to change, yknow?”  But keeping everything locked away, letting it build up more and more, only means someday it will all come bursting out, huh? 

“I’ll.. try to be a bit more honest from now on..!”

“A-Ah! You’re scarf?! Is it really alright to lend me this? Thank you!”  Nageki was already wearing another scarf at least, so he wouldn’t feel bad over using it. Ryouta accepts the scarf from him, holding it delicately as if it might break if he mishandled it. Nageki worked hard knitting it, so he doesn’t want to ruin it. Once he’s wrapped it around his neck a rush of heat comes with it, making him smile brightly at the kind dove.

“Y-yeah, I was thinking of going to the infirmary but well... You know...” Iwamine’s face instantly pops up in his mind again with a mocking look on his face.

“I...I would really appreciate if you told him for me, thank you..!” The bird shuts his eyes tight for a moment as he lowers his head into his wings. 

Soooo~! I’m sure most of you lovely people own a copy of Hatoful Boyfriend already, but I just so happen to have a steam key for the first game. I originally bought it as a gift for someone but that didn’t... exactly turn out the way I thought it was going to! I’ve posted about it on Twitter and that, but no one seemed to show any interest in getting the game.  And so it’s been sitting in my steam inventory all lonely and gathering dust! I already own the first game TWICE (steam and DLsite version) so I can’t use it for anything :Y Frankly, I’d rather someone have it than me.

So, if anyones interested in getting the steam key, please IM me! I can either send it to your email or we can friend each other on steam and I’ll send it directly through it.

Nageki listened to the other talk, feeling relaxed in the other’s company as they absorbed the warmth the furnace gave out. It was… Nice. Peaceful. It reminded him of his time in the orphanage - he missed all his brothers and sisters, living in the medical center. He’d see them soon, thought, once Dr. Iwamine had cured him. Then he and Hitori could go back home, to their real home.

“Hmm… You shouldn’t overwork yourself, Mr. Kawara.” Nageki advised him, giving Ryouta a gentle look that was a mix between worry and sternness. “I understand that it might be hard to balance between staying alive and enjoying yourself, but you shouldn’t have to bare all of that on your shoulders. Hitori is always there by my side  - even when I think he’s being smothering, it’s always nice to know he’s there. Do you not have someone like that in your life?”

O-Oh my.. How embarrassing. It had been awhile since someone talked to him like this, that he started to wear a strange smile. Could he excuse the blush rising on his face to be a result from the heat and not from how bashful he felt? “Th-Thank you. I’ll try to do things more in moderation from now on.”

Truly, he didn’t get to “enjoy” life much. Well. When Hiyoko would see him or there were school events, he definitely enjoyed himself at those. But it always felt like a loud ticking clock was going off in his head whenever he was on his own. The time spent reading a book, or playing around town, could be spent working at another job. Another job meant more money. More money meant… keeping his mother safe longer. But… working and worrying all the time made him much less efficient at his jobs and his grades. It was a wicked cycle.

Nageki raised an eyebrow, curious. Hiyoko talked about him? That was… Well, he’d like to say unexpected, but seeing how much she talked about Ryouta he supposed he should have seen it coming. Still, it was a little embarrassing… Like Hitori bragging about him to the rest of the teaching staff.

“That’s nice of her. She’s a good friend… Very loud, though. Still, the library wouldn’t be the same without her.” Nageki tilted his head, peering into the soft warm glow of the furnace. “Snow? Maybe not. I always get very sick in the winter, though… Do you? We’re both pretty ill a lot, I know that much…”

“Hehe, that’s part of her charm wouldn’t you say? She’s so energetic! I wish I could run around with even a fraction of her energy!” Speaking of not having much energy... His smile slightly faltered, yet stayed strong as the flames of the furnace continue to roar in the background. 

Oh no, it appears that someone else has fallen pray to the danger that is chugging a cup full of 5 hour energy. Seeing as he did the same thing before, worry spreads across his face for the well being of the blonde haired girl convulsing in front of him.

“…Thank you.” Nageki replied, grateful for the invitation. He knew Ryouta was a kind boy, as well as similar to himself in many ways, so it was easy to get along with the other. No doubt Ryouta was also suffering under the effects of the winter. Moving to stand beside the rock dove and holding out his hands towards the warmth, he gave Ryouta a small smile, though it was followed quickly by a look of exasperation.

“You’d think a ‘renowned’ school like St. Pigeonations would have somewhat decent indoor heating - but no such luck, I suppose.” He glanced down at the slightly shorter Ryouta, mouth quirked. “Oh, sorry - we’ve never really met properly before, have we? Miss Tosaka’s always been… There. It’s nice to finally have conversation with you.”

“No need to thank me,  but you’re welcome!” He was quite happy to be able to spend some time with Nageki like this! Despite thinking often how it’d be fun to go to the library to get to know him better, Ryouta simply was too busy with his multiple jobs. It felt like a little blessing in exchange for the harsh winter weather. 

“True! I wonder if they put most of their budget into hiring all these high profile teachers... “
