The thing about the Drama that I have a hard time coming to terms with is the reason why Emma didn't go and commit the shooting. Everyone goes with the most uncharitable interpretation of those events; as if she didn't do it because she would no longer be "the first" one to do it in her town.

The movie shows how the shooting impacted the students at Emma's school, and Emma had to sit and take in all the reactions of those around her. The pain it caused others, how shameful it is to do such a thing, the weight of real life taken. Her not going through with it read to me less as a disappointment, and more as a wake-up call.

Before the shooting happened, her view of such events was glamorized play pretend. She was trying to make a "cool" sounding manifesto putting on silly makeup and clothes. After it happened, she was face-to-face with the real consequences that would have on the people around her, and she chose not to go through with her plan.

Charlie's interpretation of this event was the MOST uncharitable possible interpretation of how things went down and idk why his viewpoint is the one taken in this scenario.

I took it as the mass murderer version of moment of jump regret. But her empathy was the thing that brought her back.

falling into a bad feedback loop online is how you get extremism. And pulling them out with empathy and without judgement is the way to help.

Rachel's judgement is what pushes people back into extremism.

And i understood how Charlie still wanted to marry her but needed time to process what he heard, because what he heard was a deeply traumatized girl wanted to react violently and instead turned towards love and empathy. And he didnt imagine she was full of that violence. So it was very difficult for him. I think had they not had the ticking clock of the wedding I dont think he would have spun out.

And not to sound deeply fuxking american, but I thought the idea that she had considered a school shooting up to the point of recording a manifesto (which was a deeply darkly funny scene), was such and incredibly teenaged thing to do. And frankly didnt seem like as big of a deal to me. She knew it was fucked up. But it didnt make her a bad person, she stayed on the line of good, but 1 not doing it and 2 steering away from violence.

Rachel on the other hand assaulted and traumatized a child. Charlie bullied someone. And Emma? She thought of violence but when it came to action chose meaningful love.

Rachel's a performative bitch and I fucking hate her.

I sobbed at the ending. BTW.

I enjoy true crime, and typically, cops are a villian there too. Unsolved crimes? Its because cops didnt take it seriously, didnt listen to victims, or fucked up the crime scene. Wrongful incarceration or false confession? Also the cops fault. Something like 1% of rapists are actually jailed for their crimes. And a BIG part of that is how cops treat the victims and then the rapist.

40% of cops are reported to be domestic abusers. Thats probably less than actual.

So not only are the cops the villians in the big civil and labor rights movements, they are also the villians day to day.

Putting a trigger warning in the tags is very different then changing the words you use.

If someone knows their triggers then can filter for them.

Changing the words to describe things to sanitize the internet for advertising is not the same thing as acknowledging triggering content for people.

One is changing the way we use language to reduce and obscure sensitive and controversial topics, which reduces it in the public sphere.

The other is a courtesy to people who know theor limits and what content is personally harmful to them. It does not reduce dialogue in a public space.
