Some more art and mockups.
Working signs? We're in business now, baby!
Got room loading working correctly (seen here with small rooms to test). Right now there's a small pause of 200 milleseconds when a room is loading, since I have yet to figure out the multiprocessing component of Python and Pygame. But as it stands, when you enter a new area and the movement pauses for a second, and the music initiates a fadeout to allow a new track to play, it feels very much like old-school Pokemon, and I'm quite happy.
Now on to test much larger rooms!
Oh yeah, the player speeds up towards the end of the .gif because I hit the run key.
Mockup teaser without color.

New main character concept art.
A selection of sprites that I've been working on.
Here's a clip of one of the songs from Mega Bytes. The music will be a collaboration between Trayson and myself. Go head on over to his SoundCloud and check out his other stuff!
PROJECT MEGA BYTES
Mega Bytes is a prototype game I'm building that mimics the old-school look and feel of the Game Boy generation. The game will draw heavily from series such as Dragon Quest Monsters and Pokémon. It was being developed in Python with Pygame and Tiled, but is now being prototyped with GameMaker.
It will feature heavy emphasis on capturing and training monsters, currently named "Bytes", which will be stored on floppy disks found within the world. Users must manage their disk space carefully since these Bytes will take up a certain amount of memory on their virtual floppy disks. Some monsters will cost more than others, and each time they level up, they will take more space. I hope to introduce a fun management mechanic that is easy to understand and makes the choices involved in balancing a team of Bytes interesting and rewarding.
Stay tuned for more updates on Project Mega Bytes.
