Fandom: Legend of the Seeker Pairing: Cara/Kahlan
It comes in the near-morning, before the stars recede. The light welling through the tavern-inn window is gray and delicate as chalk. Last night a rare indulgence, finding a hot meal and a bed over campfire fare and bedrolls unfurled on the unyielding forest floor. Last night, a quiet continuation, Cara and Kahlan seeking and finding one another in the deep dark after the men are fast asleep.
They wake first and silently. Their slumber-warm bodies have made grooves in narrow feather cushion, touching only where space demands. The touching is enough. There's fire in Cara's throat—an urge to turn her hips and spill into Kahlan's waiting lap and kiss her with a ferocity that would set her burning too.
Instead she lies motionless and waits like a hound held at heel.
In the predawn glow Kahlan's eyes shine, pale and glaucous, and there is not guilt in her glance. Only a question, whispered for being noticed in the treacherous honesty of the small hours.
"You fight for Richard. For us." Kahlan's fingers find and encircle Cara's wrist. A grip from which she could easily break free, if she chose to. "Would you fight for me?"
The meaning is not lost. Whenever Kahlan looks at her like this—full of tender empery, full of wild hope—Cara imagines herself lying prostrate. Imagines herself clutching and clinging. She takes a breath. She knows what it is to kneel.
