There's something fishy about this "elephant"...
This 10th-century gilt alloy sculpture from Nepal shows a makara, a mythical aquatic creature here depicted with the head of an elephant, the body of a crocodile, and an elaborate tail like a fish or a peacock's. A friend from EFEO recently suggested that the makara's toothy grin might help explain the smiling medieval elephants found across Eurasia from English bestiaries to Japanese incense holders. Medium: gilt copper alloy Date: 10th-century Origin: area that is now Nepal Now Los Angeles County Museum of Art M.85.279.6
