Northern Gannets, Cape St Mary’s, Newfoundland, Canada 1986 Transparency film Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve is an ecological reserve located near Cape St. Mary's on the Cape Shore, on the southwestern Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. It is home to one of Newfoundland's largest seabird colonies. The reserve is home to northern gannets, black-legged kittiwakes, common murres, and thick-billed murres, as well as dozens or hundreds of razorbill, and black guillemot breeding pairs. During the breeding season, more than 30,000 Northern Gannets crowd around on the top of a giant sea stack (aptly named “bird rock”) and neighbouring clifftops – making it the third largest colony in North America. Incredibly, visitors can view these majestic birds from as close as twenty meters as they go about their business of making nests, raising young, and performing their beautiful “sword crossing” rituals.
