Friends: September is suicide prevention awareness month. Although my words have been difficult to find this past year, I’d feel like I was letting my Brother down if I didn’t reach out to you and have this conversation. One would think a year and months removed that the weight of this tragedy would have lightened it’s presence in our lives. That isn’t the case. Not for me and I know not for a million of you either. The recent loss of other successful and revered people by suicide continues to remind us of the fragile nature of our existence. Many of us left behind find ourselves in this place of not knowing. Could we have done more? How did we miss this? The simple fact is, the answers to the questions have gone with our departed loved one. Speculation runs rampant with our imaginations and emotions, but we CAN’T ever really know for sure. Can we learn to live in the not knowing? This month of awareness hopefully offers us the opportunity to visit this conversation in a way we never have before. There MUST be a way that this horrific loss can guide us to a new place of understanding and compassion for the mental illness component of this tragedy. If you can and will, talk about it. Post about prevention awareness. Let’s educate each other. Let’s claw at the stigma and maybe we get the chance to be there for someone who we don’t even know needs us. Much love friends!
