Exchange Explainer: Tagset Nominations
It's been a quick minute since we posted about this, so let's talk about Tagset Nominations and how they fit into the sign-up and assignments process.
If you've participated in our exhanges before — or even just thought about it — you'll notice that we typically have a phase for tag nominations prior to sign-ups. This is a common step for exchanges run using AO3's exchange tools. The overall process goes like this:
Step 1: Tagset Nominations
This step consists of a form on AO3 where you can suggest the tags that you might like to receive or create. For our MDZS Exchanges, you are usually able to nominate a combination of Relationship/Character tags + Additional Tags, also known as freeforms, that correspond to our exchange theme.
Nominating does not obligate you to sign up! Mods can't see who nominates what, and if you nominate something you are not limited to only requesting/offering those things later.
This creates one big list of tags, called a tagset, that everybody will use for their sign-ups in Step 2.
This is a second form on AO3 where you officially join the exchange! When you sign up, all the tags from the tagset will be available for you to request and offer, not just the ones you nominated.
On the sign-up form, you will make one or more requests with a combination of relationships & freeform tags from the tagset that you're interested in receiving.
On the same form in a different box, you'll make offers of things you would be happy to make. Again, this will be a combination of ships and tags from the tagset. Your offers can match your requests or be totally different — it's up to you!
Step 3: Matching & Assignments
Once everyone has signed up, we'll run AO3's matching tool which compares all the offers to all the requests, and finds the ones that have tags in common.
Your assignment for the event will be one person who had at least one request with matching tags to at least one of your offers. You'll receive an email from AO3 showing your assigned person and all their requests.
Your recipient may also have a bunch of other requests that do not match your offers! You can ignore these, or base your gift on them if they look interesting. You're not obligated to make exactly what you matched on.
So the reason for using a tagset is twofold:
It helps to make sign-ups and matching smoother because everybody will be requesting and offering from the same set of event-specific tags.
It lets us use tags that aren't already ao3 canonical tags, such as freeforms like AU - Wei Wuxian turns into a bunny when he gets mad or special relationship formatting like Adult Jiang Cheng & Child Jin Ling for our Kidfic Exchange.
Hope that makes the process a little clearer!
