Drifting people seem to be everywhere I go. Even when I speak to seemingly successful people in private. They talk about how their careers are going nowhere. Drug overdoses by famous people. Scandals in the news headlines.
If you're not purposely rowing upstream against the current, then you are drifting with the current downstream. If you aren't heading towards a goal, then you are probably drifting without purpose.
Everyone has a reason for drifting. I'm too busy to think about this. I don't know what to do. I feel overwhelmed when I think about my life. Life is not fair. I tried and failed. People treat me badly. My career options are boring. I'm scared of changing career. I am disillusioned by the secular marketplace. Although these reasons seem harmless, maybe even entertaining, they could keep you on on your current track...for life!
From living on three continents, I am convinced that most people want to get ahead in life. To live with purpose. Do you remember the desire you had as a child to learn new things? People are designed by God to be ambitious.
In order to live with purpose, it means taking the risk of following one path until it is finished. However, unless you choose a single course to follow you will just keep bumbling along... until you die. What a waste of your precious life!
Most people only make career decisions after things don't work out like they expect. Maybe you lose your job or you find that you aren't getting promoted. If you are not moving in a direction of your choosing, it is time to start choosing.
It is much better to make small changes in your career every day instead of waiting for "big bang" moments to occur.
The secular way of dealing with drift in your career is to focus on yourself. A self-serving secular career where you are at the very center of every decision. Emulating your secular colleagues. In ten years you will wake up and wonder "isn't there more to life than trying to make me happy?" Although you have money, respect and power it means nothing when you die. You've built your own kingdom instead of God's. You haven't changed the world in the way that God designed.
God has a different way of dealing with drift in your career. It is not about serving yourself. He designed you to change the world in relationship with Him.
You are designed by God to combine faith with your career to change the world.
The Bible says in Psalm 16:11: âYou will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.â
Working with God means learning to interact with Him through your spirit. He shows you which way to go in order to find life in your career. The pleasure of working with God is eternal.
God doesn't expect you to live by principles. He directs His Kingdom on earth by speaking to people. He wants to work with you.
One day in July 2016 I felt God speak to me. I was just walking along the street in my adopted home country Singapore. He asked me to write a book to help drifting Christians. I wrote about my experience here:

When I asked Him for an explanation, He asked me to write the book ten times. It turned out I had a lot to learn. So began a change in my career based on God's Word. Over a period of nine months I focused on writing the book. He gradually taught me how I could change my career and help you do the same.
I have finished my task of writing the book, which I have called Change Business Career with God. I literally wrote the book ten times. I asked for feedback from people along the way. It reflects not only the spiritual aspects of changing career by the practical aspects that I have learnt from working in a range of roles across three continents as a chartered accountant.
Who is this book for? This book will help if you would like to:
- start a business of your own
- work in a business that belongs to someone else
- get guidance on what to do when you finish school, college, university or prison
- end a midlife crisis
- find a meaningful career
- learn how to work with God
If you work with God you will not compare yourself to other people or feel like you are missing out.
What is the goal of the book? To enable you to change the world with products and services. For example, you could deliver God's life into the world through a new website. You could deliver hope into the world through physical products. You could change the world with God's love in your job. When you work based on God's Word, His power is released through your business career.
God created you and knows what you will do best even if you have never tried it before. Business books that focus only on making money will not lead you into the adventure of discovering the person God created you to be.
Here's how it works. The first part of the book concentrates on asking God specific questions about your career. You listen to what He says. These are the seeds that are going to grow into your new career. Keep on asking God and you will receive.
You are a spiritual being, designed to hear God speak. God works in your career when you listen to what He says and implement it.
The second part of the book enables God's Word to take root by getting rid of beliefs that aren't true. Increase your confidence in operating how God made you.
The final part of the book will enable God's Word to develop into products or services in your new career. Seek products and services that will change the world in the way that God showed you. The products and services that you shortlist need to be sustainable and in line with your unique gifts. Keep on seeking and you will find.
The final stage of the process is to knock on doors. As you knock on doors, you change the world. Keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.
Keep on asking God for the change you are called to make in the world. Keep on seeking products and services that enables you to make that change. Keep on knocking on doors until you change the world. Live life like this and you will never drift again.

You find meaning when you advance God's plan in relationship with Him. God is the most awesome person in the universe and it is exciting to live based on what He says.
