According to costume designer Mary E. Vogt, director Jon M. Chu originally imagined a ring modeled after an engagement ring that John F. Kennedy had designed for Jackie Kennedy. But Michelle Yeoh loves simplicity and was less than impressed. “‘We had a ring designed already, and our mock-up looked so shitty that Michelle [Yeoh] was like, That cannot be the ring I wear,” laughs Chu. “I’m like, I know, I know. I’m so embarrassed by it, but we don’t have the money.’” As a solution, Yeoh offered up her own ring to the production. “The ring belongs to me,” Yeoh told BuzzFeed’s “Profile” series. “I don’t wait for people to give me presents. If I want flowers, I’m going to send them to me.”
