Libertarians are just dumb white guys refusing to accept they are not the brightest.
Rand, why does scalability always have to be connected to a greedy corporation?
A friendly PSA for everyone migrating from Wattpad to AO3!
Commenting Etiquette
No Unsolicited Concrit: Authors post fanworks for free as a hobby. Unless an author explicitly asks for constructive criticism in their notes, keep comments positive and critique-free.
Don't Like, Don't Read (DLDR): If a story, relationship, or trope bothers you, hit the back button. Leaving negative comments over subjective preferences breaks core fandom norms.
Phrase Update Requests Politely: Demanding "Update soon!" can feel transactional. Pair your excitement with appreciation for the current chapter (e.g., "Loved this chapter, can't wait to see where the story goes!").
Short Comments & Emojis Are Welcomed: You don't need to write an essay! Leaving a kudos or a single heart emoji in the comment section is a totally valid and appreciated form of comment.
Tagging & Relationships
Accurate Warning Tags: Always select the appropriate Major Archive Warnings or explicitly mark "Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings."
Distinguish / vs &: Use / strictly for romantic or sexual pairings (Character A/Character B). Use & exclusively for platonic or familial relationships (Character A & Character B).
Site Rules & Features
No Monetization: AO3 is a non-profit archive run entirely on donations. Selling physical copies anywhere on your profile or story text violates TOS and risks account suspension.
Public vs. Private Bookmarks: Bookmarks are public by default, and authors can see everything written in them. If you use bookmarks for personal ratings, critical notes, or reading progress, remember to check the Private box.
AND DON´T USE AI.
Edit: if you do use ai... tag it
This! And AO3 allows original works as well as fanfiction, meta, essays, fanart, podfic and other fanworks, but not recommendation lists. It's an archive not a social network.
Niu Lai has not made its way onto tumblr yet so I guess my anglophone ass has to make a post about it
This movie is currently a huge meme in china. It came out of nowhere and inexplicably got a theatrical release, looks like ass, was animated completely by the director and his mother, and took several years to make. "Niu Lai" translates roughly to "The bull is coming" and apparently the film has several other allusions to stock market puns. The Chinese stock market coincidentally had an uptick the day of its release which added further fuel to the meme fire. After going viral Niu Lai began to actually turn profit at the box office, theatres unprepared for Niu Lai mania (the creators did not distribute any promotional material) had to improvise DIY posters:
Niu Lai has now been pulled from theatres.
Good news: Niu Lai was only pulled from cinemas its hometown, because "the film’s poor quality could harm the city’s image." The rest of China is still screening it.
my favorite thing about reading The Three Musketeers is the way Alexandre Dumas stops occasionally after one of his heroes does something kinda scandalous (i.e., all the characters' mistresses are married women) to remind you that morals back in the 1620s were VERY DIFFERENT and everything his heroes do was totally fine according to the morals of "that gallant time" even if we may find them terrible and scandalous in this more enlightened period of 1844
it reminds me of reading The Decameron in college, even though The Decameron was set more or less in what was modern day for its time (unlike The Three Musketeers which is more a historical action/adventure novel). because like the stories are told within a narrative frame of these young nobles fleeing the Black Plague together, but gasp! the nobles are young men and women traveling together with no chaperon!
so there's a whole author's note from Giovanni Boccaccio explaining that you must understand, morals were loosened because everyone was more worried about dying from the plague than what the young people were doing! he's not condoning this sort of behavior! it's just that sometimes this happened because of the plague and should not be taken as a commentary on his own views!
...which sadly makes me think of how authors today are assumed to be condoning morally questionable things that happen in their books unless they pause the whole narrative to say to the reader, "I don't condone this, though"
but the POINT is
I don't actually know what my point is, I just find it very funny. maybe precisely because it's sadly relatable lol
I think what it is is that Boccaccio wrote a whole author's note, whereas Dumas keeps throwing it into the narrative but like SO briefly. it almost feels like an editor was like "alexandre please, I enjoy what you're doing here but you KNOW readers are not going to think your heroes are so heroic when they're constantly making love to married women! please, you must address this!" so Dumas would just throw in half a sentence like "remember, this was totally fine according to the morals of the time. anyway,"
like I think I find it funny bc it feels like Dumas didn't care at all, because he LOVES his Inseparables (particularly Athos) and d'Artagnan, like they can do no wrong, literally everyone is constantly complimenting d'Artagnan all the time, so I'm convinced HE did not find it scandalous or even worry about readers finding it scandalous when they got up to things that were considered morally wrong by his own time
lmfao in last night's chapters it wasn't even one of his faves, this time it was Lord de Winter walking out of Milady's prison, swearing, "which was not ungentlemanly at the time." it's so funny. it just fucking slays me. Alexandre Dumas pausing the narrative very briefly to say, "man, if only it weren't ungentlemanly to swear NOW I'd do it all the time"
(okay maybe he's not saying that, but in my heart he is)

These pescatarian birds are directly exposed to PFAS contamination due to the island's position near the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Over fifty years of data show a peak in PFAS (also known as "forever chemicals") content in seabird eggs in the 90s, followed by a decrease as regulations went into effect. The most recent findings show a 70% decrease of most common PFAS.
While continued vigilance a regulation is needed, this data indicates that regulations are working to reduce PFAS concentrations in marine ecosystems.
Yes!!!! I did a review of literature on PFASs in human drinking water about half a year ago, and there is a lot of really good progress! Please celebrate this, please don't let this solution be forgotten (at least so quickly) as the ozone layer or acid rain.
We are making genuine progress! Producers are dramatically altering how much they use PFAS and how much gets released in effluent, but also there's a lot better understanding of how to remove PFAS from the environment!
Environmental problems CAN BE SOLVED.
Usually when the electrician goes 'hey.... there's something you should see' it's because someone set up shoddy wiring. This time it was because he pulled two snakes out of my wall
The dream...
I love the x-men so much because that's just what leftist infighting is like! that's literally all it is! xavier is a sellout and they all hate him but he's the only one with any money. everyone complains about "they keep switching sides and dating each other it's so fucking confusing" like my dudes have you never been a part of any socialist organisation, ever. then people will go "magneto is so strong how has he not killed a bunch of teenagers" HE DOESN'T WANT TO KILL THEM! this started in a goddam basement over coffee he does not want to hurt them he just wants them to shut up and listen and will fling cars to do so
Magneto one drink in: I love Charles but hes such a kiss-ass, we don’t need to be FRIENDS, we just need mutual aid communities and to be left alone
Professor X one drink in: what the fuck is his self sustaining mutant community going to do for all the mutants born to human parents, which is MOST OF THEM, he’s so gay he’s forgotten how babies are made and I want to kiss his stupid face
I'm not the first to point it out but fire lord ozai really had just a comically short reign. He fumbled it so badly. Imagine. You get the throne. You tell your gay son to go find a mythical hero who doesn't exist anymore so he'll stop embarrassing you & he really thinks he's gonna do it. Lol. Time to keep this war going for another hundred years. In the time it takes to crack your knuckles the fuckhead actually did it. But then he makes friends with the mythical hero who doesn't exist. And you're like hey wait. Stop that. You've already fumbled it unbelievably badly. Fucked it up on a scale most rulers could only dream of. You get pacifism blasted straight to hell. Your gay ass son is the new king. What the fuck. And then you like die in prison and nobody cares
Cannot stress enough that he gave Zuko a purposefully impossible task (find the avatar) and three (3) years later he actually fucking did it. He gets like a messenger hawk or whatever saying hey the avatar is alive. Btw. & he's like what the fuck. & within six months of this he has fumbled not only the crown but also the war started by his great grandfather, ongoing for a full century, until YOU 🫵 (Ozai) tried to be funny. Little did he know the power of friendship was about to be hilarious
Imagine if sisyphus was like hey boss I'm about to finish rolling that boulder like you asked me to 👍 & then it rolls back down and kills you instantly
Being a DC fan in actuality is really fucking funny because you’ll mostly stay in your own corner with passing knowledge on other characters and then sometimes discourse you’ve never heard of pops up on your dash about another subset of DC and when you click on it it’s apparently an argument that’s been going on for 20+ years and has divided the entire character tag, had 3 writers fired, forced DC editorial to step in only to get lashed off the internet, led to 7 fist fights and also Batman is There. And then you click out of it and Never Hear Of It Again.
These two next to each other in the tags list is sending me

If you want a good object lesson about what we can and can't know about the past, we don't know Ea-Nasir was a dishonest merchant selling shoddy goods.
What we know is we have found a cache of complaint tablets about him selling low quality copper as high quality, in a site that was probably his own residence. We know multiple people complained he was a cheat. It's entirely possible they were right. It's also entirely possible that he kept these complaint letters as records of people he would no longer do business with, because they had made accusations and threats in order to bully him into giving them free copper. That is an equally valid interpretation of the evidence.
My point is not that we have maligned Ea-Nasir, my point is that thousands of years later, we do not and cannot know.
Actually he wrote all the complaints himself with various sock puppet accounts to drum up sympathy subscribers to his Claytreon
it's all a huge misunderstanding, it's nothing to do with actual copper it's about him having a policeman fetish and our theory will be finally vindicated once someone unearths the missing tablet where he wrote "so sue me, I do like a man in cuneiform"
He wasn’t picky about them either - I heard he was into low-quality coppers

My friend worked with the People With AIDS Coalition in 1990 and found this while cleaning out some old folders. I can't stop thinking about it.
I offered to come check on my friend's animals while she's away for the long weekend
She thinks I'm joking
But I'm ready
Wait. Are there 200, but to be numbered 1-250? Did I read those tags right? 😲
Yes there are actually 202 of them, the company sent 2 extra in the package, and I will be numbering them on the bottom with sharpie marker 1-250. This will ensure even if she manages to find all 202, she will never truly stop feeling like there might be a tiny duck somewhere unknown in the house. Lurking. Waiting to appear at the strangest time.
#sometimes you must be gently evil to your friends#so they know you love them enough
very very important
hey op i don't think those are frogs like you said
they're right those arent frogs op.
I meant to prank my friend by hiding hundreds of small ducks after saying I would hide small frogs, but it turns out due to some quirk of only 3 people on the entire Internet knowing what a prank is, it seems I have pranked hundreds of other people by saying I would put 100 small frogs in my friends house, when in fact the prank was that it was 202 small ducks.
an update. it has been over 4 months and they are still finding ducks
1 year and 7 months later:
#imagine the dread she felt when she found the first duck and realized op wasn't joking (via @robyn-goodfellowe)
The key to a good prank, imo, is that the person you're pranking should not feel bad. They should feel delight. My friend has 2 kids. She walked in the door from her vacation, and instead of having two cranky children to deal with as soon as she got home on top of everything else, she got two children excited to run around finding small ducks. My friend knows me well enough to know that when I say weird things there's always a chance I'm not joking, and she would have said no (and been respected) if she didn't want this. The prank was never that I was hiding the toys, just which toys they were, and how many would be hidden.
