tulip : how does your muse view people in general ?
i think one of katniss’s best and most defining traits is her humanity. it’d be a lie to say that katniss is a people person in any sense of the meaning, but she values others and she values the lives of others. it can take her time to warm up to people. i think she certainly leans more toward the cynical side with her views, but people cannot be defined as a whole, and i definitely think she knows that as well. once someone is important to katniss, that’s it. following the events in the capitol during mockingjay, i definitely think there’s a good period of time where she thinks to give up on people. her cynicism is essentially amplified, she loses all hope in humanity. but the beautiful thing about katniss is her humanity. and in healing, in reclaiming her life, she’s able to see the good in people once more.
zinnia : how has the loss of fallen comrades and/or loved ones affected your muse ? has it taught them anything or given them any new perspectives ?
i think it goes without saying that katniss carries every single person she knows that has been killed with her. those she has killed herself, those whose deaths she blames herself for, those who died because of her, those who she could not save. she keeps a running list, though it does start to become a bit too long. katniss finds herself to blame for so many deaths and wrongdoings, regardless of whether any of it was ever her fault or not. unfortunately, death is a major theme in katniss’s life. she lost her father at 11, her first brush with death. the one that affected her most until prim’s death. her father’s death was devastating and she wasn’t even allowed to mourn, she wasn’t comforted. i think it really shaped the way she deals with her emotions ( bottling them up, pushing them aside, going into action mode instead of allowing herself to grieve) and certainly can be attributed to why she holds on to her sister so tight. prim’s death ( and honestly, those in the games, those in the war, cinna’s death, etc ) only show katniss that the world is bleak, and those in power don’t care about anyone, only about being in control. they don’t care who they hurt. who they kill. who pays for their crimes. this affects katniss’s trust in the world, which was nearly nonexistent following her father’s death anyhow. but every death that katniss has ever encountered has affected her and changed her in some way. from family members, her father, her sister, right down to the innocent, nameless little girl in the lemon yellow coat killed in the capitol by the rebels. i think her book that she makes along with peeta and haymitch, as a way to remember all of those they’d lost, is her way of finally healing from the deaths that affected her so deeply. a way to finally begin to release them.

his death had weighed heavy on her conscience. she had done it for rue. out of necessity. to kill or be killed. but who were they? a girl from disctrict 12. a boy from disctrict 1. forced into the arena to fight to the death by people who had not a single care in the world for either of them. who had manufactured the idea that they were to be enemies. and still it stands. but he is not her enemy.
her shock at finding out he was still alive had taken somewhat of a toll. overwhelmed was the only way she could think to describe how she felt. even now at his words, the fight threatens to leave her.
