Maybe spoilers but only for anyone that hasn’t watch Season 1 of MCD and up to Season 2, episode 38
Season 1, Ep 40: Laurance gets left behind in the Nether while Castor the Chicken Shaman and Aphmau manage escape the Shadow Knights and Ghasts
Season 1, Ep 52: Laurance returns to the Overworld because of Ungrth “transcending the realm barriers” and using his power to “free him from his possession”
Season 1, Ep 53: Sasha and Gene’s conversation (where Gene was angry that Laurance escaped because he could warn people about their plan) remind us that Vylad and Laurance interacted at least enough times in the 12 episodes they were stuck in the Nether together for the idea “Vylad might know another way out” to occur but also that Sasha and Laurance interacted enough for him to mention it to her (there are scenes showing these btw. I just don’t remember the episodes they’re in and decided not to look for them)
Season 2, Ep 13: We learn about soul stones from Sasha. According to her a soul stone that can only carry someone in it, if said person consents. We also learn that Sasha was Laurance’s mentor back when he was trapped in the Nether and that she (though still twisted by a human’s standards) was considered kind as a Shadow Knight. Not once were soul stones mentioned to Laurance since he barged into the prison looking for Aphmau (not that I can remember Aphmau mentioning soul stones to anyone else)
Season 2, Ep 15: Sasha gets angry due to Zenix’s actions (going mad with power, absorbing other Shadow Knights in the army forcing them to release the prisoners, attempting to revive the Shadow Lord by… fusing with the Shadow Lord? That bit was rather unclear). Aphmau accidentally knocks out Sasha while trying to put her back in the soul stone. Laurance is there while this happens. He doesn’t comment on the soul stone or on the “I was trying to put her in the soul stone and she didn’t wanna- and she was just-”. Only on how he was glad Aphmau knocked Sasha out and that he about it do knock her out himself because “Shadow Knights have the uncanny ability to increase the strength of evil things around them when angry.” (maybe implying that he already knows soul stones, maybe because of Sasha?)
Season 2, Ep 37: Aphmau runs into Vylad at the ruins of the abandoned wolf tribe
Season 2, Ep 38: Vylad and Laurance reunite with Laurance feeling guilty for leaving Vylad behind.
(Laurance) “Everything just happened so sudden when Ungrth broke the realm barrier and found me… next thing I know I was escaping back to the Overworld.”
(Vylad) …
(Laurance) “…I know I told you that I was going to help you and… I’m sorry I was not able to fulfill that promise.”
(Vylad) “…I didn’t know anything about you anyway. Aside from the fact that you were the only one who came to speak to me.”
We also learn that there are more painful ways to become a Shadow Knight (implied to have been used on Laurance) and that Sasha helped to torture Vylad while he was a prisoner in the Nether.
(Laurance) “Sasha was apart of Vylad’s torture and they… don’t mix well. At all.”
Some other things I remember watching in an episode but can’t remember which episode is that in MCD time:
- A day in the Overworld is 2 weeks in the Nether
- A minute in the Irene Dimension is a year in the Overworld
So knowing all of this…
Theoretically…
Could Laurance have saved Vylad?
…via plopping Vylad into a soul stone and bringing it with him when he made his grand escape from the Nether with Ungrth? I would say… maybe. Mainly because this hinges on quite a few things such as:
- Laurance learning what a soul stone is from Sasha (which is not exactly confirmed) and actually having one in his possession (which could be if Sasha showed him where they were)
- The idea that Ungrth suddenly grabbed Laurance without (presumably) any warning or resistance from other Shadow Knights and the Ghasts that appeared during Castor’s and Aphmau’s escape from the Nether is false. Given the distance from the ceiling of the cave to the fortress is large enough (which is where Ungrth was implied to have broken the realm barrier in season 1, ep 53) along with the fireballs from the Ghasts? I would imagine that trained soldiers such as the Shadow Knights would have a quick response time meaning that Laurance might have enough time to snap out of his potential shock and go get Vylad
Keep in mind that some of the Shadow Knights were once knights living in the Overworld after all such as: Sasha, Gene, Zenix but he wasn’t there at the time, Vincent who also probably wasn’t there at the time but definitely existed by then lorewise (he’s a 100 year old Shadow Knight by the time we or rather Aphmau meets him in season 2 after the 15 year time skip), another guard that I can’t remember the name of but wasn’t a Shadow Knight yet (happens in season 2, this event happens in season 1) Laurance himself along however many others (NPCs) came before him
- Laurance either has enough of an amicable relationship with Vylad to both quickly and successful convince Vylad to allow himself to be put in a soul stone carried by Laurance or that Laurance doesn’t have enough of an amicable relationship with Vylad but Vylad’s willing to take the risk anyway to escape from his cell and torture (or maybe a mix of both?)
- There not being some sort of magicks or whatnot on the cell preventing Laurance from using the stone on Vylad (which maybe not? It depends on if Sasha and the others tortured Vylad with magicks or the old fashioned way)
- Vylad being able to survive the trip at all while in the stone since both Laurance and Ungrth were both affected by it in canon (blindness, sleeping until rebirth) and they were potentially (not exactly confirmed?) protected by Ungrth’s power
Well that’s my thought on the topic. Sorry about how long this whole thing is (when I first started typing this, I meant for it to be quick. Not- whenever this ended up being) but thanks if you made it all the way through. That aside- Anyone else wanna give this a spin? Any thoughts on the matter? …maybe I’m just screaming into the void… oh well

In my fic his scarf has as many uses as the Onceler is convinced the Thneed has: it's a scarf it's a hood it's a rag it's a baby carrier it's a blanket it's a weapon it's the only thing he has left from a literal lifetime ago
aughh the idea of vylad using his scarf to keep levin safe and warm in the days he was taking care of him is heartbreaking ;-;
his scarf is the last connection he has to his life, the last connection he has with his brother and his mother. he never takes it off, not even in the nether. it keeps him safe, so it only makes sense that he tried to keep a tiny human alive with it.
