Plainspoilering St. Elmore's Fires:
St. Elmore's Fires is another 80's soundtrack that had a bonus movie attached. It is about, I don't know... five or six friends who are rich, spoiled, white college buddies at Georgetown who have graduated and now have to grow up. This was before the "growing up" age was shifted into the thirties. John Bender is an upcoming political wonk who, to the shock and dismay of his friends, is becoming a Republican. His friends still like and respect him, so it is completely unlike today. His girlfriend is the weird girl from Breakfasts Clubs. Then there is Sam Seaborn who is a wastoid sax player who keeps the group together by being scummy and irresponsible and sexually predacious. There is another girl who does some things, and then there is Molly from Ghost who is unlikable and who borrows money and lives over her means and screws her boss. Kirby Keager (who will always be Kirby Keager to me) is in love with Andies McDowall (like every other man in America at that time) and acts goofy to be the comic relief.
The star of the movie is Blane from Pretty in Pink. He's the only character in the movie with a functioning soul (other than maybe Kirby) and he's in love with the weird girl from Breakfasts Clubs. Blane steals the movie by not being a bottom-dwelling rich asshole who mistreats everyone but says cool things to make it seem cute. He says cool things too. I take it back. The other girl who is rich but refuses to marry the schmuck and likes to help poor people... she has a soul too. Everything goes bad until Molly tries to freeze herself for attention. This is after Sam Seaborn tried to sexually assault her. Then everything is good because people learn they have to grow up. They stop binge drinking at St. Elmore's and they go to an older, more mature place to binge drink. All except for Sam Seaborn who gets on a bus to go become a lowlife rapist somewhere else, perhaps at the Democratic National Convention. The soundtrack is awesome. 3.5 STARS.
