I think that if a story ever pulls a line like "You could have destroyed your magic with a stunt like that!" or "Pushing ahead with your magic too quickly can have dangerous consequences!" then the story should be obligated at some point to show me these magically disabled people.
All stories should have more disabled people, honestly, because disability is a basic part of being alive! What am I supposed to think of any given fictional community if I never see any elderly people, any retired people, any injured people, or any disabled people?
But seriously, a lot more fantasy stories specifically could really stand to show people who have been burned by magic to various degrees and are now living with the consequences. I'm too used to the protagonists fainting and sleeping extreme recklessness off without issue.
@crabussy
There is some of that in the Curse Words series by Derin Edala (@derinthescarletpescatarian). For example there is a character who is blind and has organ damage due to not being able control his magic when it awakened, another has a healing spell that puts a lot of strain on his body simply by him having it and needs to constantly use it to heal himself. Said healing only works properly inside a place of high magical power (the school most of it takes place in) so he can't leave that. As for the protagonist, going into the specifics would be very spoilery, but he does end up with a disability due to magic use.
JC Avatar tries very hard to be hard scifi but also something something technology past a certain point is indiscernable from magic yadayadayada, anyway as a person with a seizure disorder for me Kiri having to make the choice to risk seizing underwater if she tries to commune with Eywa, knowing damn well that she will probably drown but knowing the alternative of waiting to be slaughtered with the rest of her family and clan, hit home good.

In a desperate attempt to lower the production budget, director James Cameron confirmed Tuesday that the nextΒ AvatarΒ film would be set entirely in a Pandora studio apartment. βLook, you canβt always get a blank check to do all the motion capture and underwater sets that you want, so I decided that the next chapter will focus on the modest but comfortable studio apartment Jake and Neytiri move into near the remains of the Hometree,β said the filmmaker, who explained that fan-favorite Payakan, a massive whale-like creature that made appearances inΒ Avatar: The Way Of WaterΒ andΒ Avatar: Fire And Ash, would relocate to the familyβs bathtub for the remainder of the franchise.Β
